Tips to Save Money With Alternative Energy and House Solar Power

Filed in overton uk Leave a comment

As gas prices soar utility bills rise as well. Natural disasters are occurring more and more shutting down power for days or weeks. With alternative energy sources such as solar power and wind power you do not need to worry about such issues. Solar energy, power from the sun, is free and inexhaustible. Learn to set up house solar power today.

With the ever increasing costs of living there is no better time then right now to start producing our own electricity. whether you want to simply reduce your power bills or completely eliminate them, it couldn’t be easier.

You will save hundreds of dollars a month. and thousands of dollars a year. for the rest of your life. some people switching to solar power have been able to slash their electricity bill by 80% or more Solar energy is also the cheapest way to generate renewable energy. you will be able to protect your pocket book during these recession times and spend money on more important things.

You will have a lot of fun in building your own power systems. you can do it with your close friends and family during a week-end and everyone will enjoy it.

The savings can typically pay for a solar system in one month’s time. Plus, the fuel is free, with no moving parts, the cells require little upkeep and because they burn no fuel and have no moving parts, solar systems are clean and silent. another great reason to install a renewable energy system in your home is that you will increase the value of your home by thousands

You will be able to go completely off-grid if you want, knowing that rising energy prices will not affect you. also, you could possibly be able to make the electricity company pay you, because the surplus of what you produce will make the meter go the other way, in case you want to stay on-grid. What? your probably wondering right now, but it’s true. Most electric companies utilize net metering, which means your electricity meter can run forwards and backwards. when you produce more power than you use at any given moment, the meter runs backwards as you send the excess back to the grid and effectively sell that power back to your power company. (They pay or credit you at exactly the same price per KWh they charge you). for the average customer this results in significant reductions in their electricity bill, though some generate more total power than they use and receive a payment from the electric company.

Most people are unaware that solar cells and wind power can be used to power up basically any appliance you have in your home: fridge, washing machine, computer, TVs, lights. while others wonder if solar energy really works. Ponder this.solar cells were originally developed for use in space, where repair is extremely expensive, if not impossible. To this day solar energy still powers nearly every satellite circling the earth because it operates reliably for long periods of time with virtually no maintenance.

Gulf Oil Spill

Filed in overton uk Leave a comment

Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and cauldron bubble. Louisiana State University Professor Ed Overton leaned out of a fishing boat and dunked a small jar just beneath the surface. God what a mess, he said under his breath.

On the 20th of April an explosion erupted on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf, killing 11 people and injuring 17. the real damage was yet to come as gallons of oil started pouring out of the well. Since then, estimates of over 200, 000 gallons of oil are leaking every day. the oil slick is now the size of Delaware and Maryland combined. on shorelines the damage stretches 241 km, from Dauphin Island, Alabama to Grand Isle, Louisiana. it is now affecting the marshland that stretches along the coastland.

These marshlands or wetlands are home to about 34, 000 Brown pelicans and seagulls, which are right now, trying to dive through the oil-soaked ocean to get to their food supply. Thousands of migratory birds travelling from South America making their way north, traditionally stop off at the Gulf Coast for two to three weeks are now in danger. Sea turtles, manatees and dolphins are attempting to come up for air through the slick.

There are three species that have been highlighted as most endangered by the slick, the Brown pelican who recently was just taken off the endangered list, the Bluefin tuna and the Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle. the explosion could not have happened at a worse time as all these species are now returning to the Gulf area for breeding, expecting their home to be the way it was when they left it.

One third of the endangered Bluefin tuna population use the Gulf as their breeding ground. Other fish who use the area for breeding also include the marlin and the swordfish. all of these creatures use the coral reefs as their food supply; a coral reef that is now being destroyed not by the oil, but by the chemical dispersants that BP is using to break-up the oil.

Dolphins have washed up dead. Endangered sea turtles have been found with oil stuck on their corneas. Lifeless brown pelicans, classified as endangered until recently, have been carried away in plastic bags. Beaches in Grand Isle, Louisiana are splatter with globs of sticky crude. and when the moon rises over the coast there, the oil-soaked ocean sparkles like cellophane under a spotlight reported John D. Sutter from CNN.

BP has released more than 700, 000 gallons of chemicals on the ocean to attempt to break up the slick and minimize the impact on the environment. such a large amount of dispersants have never before been released deep into the ocean before. the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) and independent researchers are questioning whether the chemicals are not making matters worse.

The goal here is to keep large slicks of oil from reaching shallow waters and destroying our estuaries, our wetlands and our way of life, EPA Official said. It’s a trade-off, but an informed one.

The dispersants are made up of a concoction of chemicals, which about one-third are proprietary – which means that even BP does not know exactly what they are spraying. the surfactants – a lipoprotein used in soaps, is the main purpose of the spraying, as it reduces the surface tension of the liquids, breaking the oil slick into droplets. the concept is the finer the breakdown, the easier it becomes for both large creatures like the Bluefin tuna and tiny creatures like krill to ingest the oil and surfactants themselves.

What the chemicals are also causing are oil plumes, big clouds of oil that are levitated about 1km below the surface, not quiet sinking but not floating either. these plumes have been reported as large as 9.6 km wide and 35.4 km long; millions of oil beads being carried with the current. To date at least 2 of the plumes have been discovered, one of which is making a slow movement towards the DeSota Canyon. the DeSoto is to the Gulf what a rainforest is to a land-based ecosystem. it is a deep erosional valley south of Florida, with nutrient-rich waters, making it the home to fish, coral and other organisms.

There are 2 substantial reefs in the gulf that are under threat. Originally scientists were concerned about what the oil would do to these reefs, but now the concern has shifted to what the dispersants and the plume would do, as they are significantly more toxic to the coral than the crude oil.

The oil plume could also choke off and kill coastal marshes in the productive Mississippi Delta and barrier islands. the other concern is the oil could create a massive oxygen-free ‘dead-zone.’ the bacteria that eat the oil also chew oxygen out of the ocean. Due to such large quantities of oil, the bacteria might deplete oxygen reserves until deep-water fish essentially suffocate.

At the time of this article (10th of June) the numbers of wildlife deaths have been minimum. however, environmentalists are expecting the worst to happen as the oil spreads. as the oil rig was in deep water, it will take time to reach shore and for the full damage to be seen. the other aspect is what will happen to the oil that stays in the deep water. it will also be difficult to give a true count of wildlife deaths as a lot of the deep-sea creatures will be carried in to the open ocean and not wash ashore. the other factor is that they might not die from oil directly but indirectly. the oil would only have to kill one link in the food chain for the whole system to be affected.

BP have tried numerous ways of fixing the leak, including putting a lid on it, injecting the hole with golf balls, tyres and junk and their latest attempt which is to siphon it. but in the end, only a relief well, expected to be finished by early August, would be able to plug the well. Drilled from an angle, the relief well has reached 12, 900 feet from the ocean surface and may reach a depth of 18, 000 feet.

Clearly we are going to have to require that drilling rigs and production platforms have reliable back-systems. Right now, they are sorely lacking. Why else would BP be scrambling for any solutions to rein in or stop the gushing crude? I wouldn’t call injecting junk into the blowout preventer to be a reliable system, Senator Nelson said.

As part of a coordinated response that combines tactics deployed above water, below water, offshore and close to coastal areas, controlled burns have been taken place to try and efficiently remove oil from open water in an effort to protect shoreline and wildlife. in total, more than 100 burns have been conducted to remove a total of 2.8 million gallons of oil from the water a report said on the 31st of May 2010

BP has declared they will pay for all damages. on the first of June, they announced they had spent $990 million so far on fighting and cleaning the spill. their deep pockets might reach an end however, as BP’s stock has already dropped over 15%. the company has lost over $75 billion in worth since the oilrig exploded. Other companies that were involved in the spill have also felt the heat. Transocean, Halliburton and Cameron have all lost at least 30% in value.

But financially that’s the least of their concerns. According to federal law, BP also faces a minimum fine of $1, 000 per barrel of oil spilled. on the 1st of June it was estimated that at least 20 million to 42 million gallons of crude oil have gushed into the Gulf. If the spill were to be contained today, that a total of between $480 million and $1 billion.

Bloomber News – 1st of June – reported that BP declared in its permit application for rights to drill in the gulf that it could handle a spill 10 times larger than the current one. Famous last words.

BP has announced they will pay for all damages caused by the spill, but the International Bird Rescue organisation responsible for cleaning up the oil on the surrounding wildlife, is taking in donations.

Yorkshire Copper Tube calls for change to scrappage laws – Builders’ Merchants News

It comes as metal theft continues to rise, which leaves businesses out of pocket and unable to complete planned jobs.

When trading in scrap metal in other parts of Europe people are required to give their full personal details and a bank account for money to be transferred into, which deters theft and ensures that dealers are accountable for the goods they receive.

Mr Overton said: “As we are a member of the KME Group of companies, which together represent Europe’s largest producer of copper and copper alloy materials, we are in constant talks with our colleagues overseas.

“They are flabbergasted by how relaxed the laws are in the UK for regulating the sale of scrap metal and we are urging the Government to have a rethink to help small businesses across the UK.

One such business is AT Plumbing in Cheltenham which experienced metal theft at the owner’s home twice in one day in November.

After reading about the company’s plight in the Gloucester Echo, mr Overton met Owen Thomas, who runs the plumbing business, to present him with

Famous Killers – Prominent Murderers of the 1800s

Filed in overton uk Leave a comment

Throughout history, murderers have always seemed to rivet the attention of the public. Hapless victims, their calculated killers, and all the gruesome details of the crime seem to fascinate most people, and the trials are oftentimes sensational events that attract the masses. Killers committing their heinous crimes during the 19th century were no different than the ones of today, but a few of these criminals stand out in history.

Champ Ferguson – the story of Champ Ferguson is set in the mountains of Tennessee during the height of the American Civil War. For reasons not completely clear, Ferguson became a staunch supporter of the Rebel cause; some say Union soldiers raped his wife and daughter, while others say that the Confederacy promised him clemency on an existing murder charge if he promised his support. whatever his reasons were, Ferguson became one of the most notorious and feared guerrillas in Tennessee, and also one of the most prolific killers of Union soldiers and supporters in the area. Noted for his sadistic tendencies when he found a new victim, Ferguson is estimated to have killed over 100 people, though he was only tried for the murders of 53. Ferguson was arrested and tried for murder in may of 1865, creating something of a spectacle for a public eager to see him sentenced to death. though Ferguson freely admitted to committing the many murders, he maintained that his acts were part of military activities and he only killed those who would have killed him. Ferguson was convicted of war crimes and sentenced to hang on October 20, 1865. His death closed the chapter of one of the South’s most notorious guerrilla fighters, feared by some and revered by others.

H. H. Holmes – known by many as America’s first documented serial killer, H. H. Holmes is responsible for the deaths of as many as 100 people, though he confessed to only 27 of those murders. Born in new Hampshire in 1860 under the name Herman Webster Mudgett, Holmes is best known for the time he spent in Chicago during the World’s fair in 1893. after graduating from medical school in Michigan, Holmes moved to Chicago to practice pharmacy. Dispensing medicine, however, was not high on his priority list, and instead he became involved in a number of shady business deals swindling people out of their money. in 1893, construction began on the Castle, which would serve as his home/office, a hotel for visitors to the fair, and ultimately, his killing grounds. the building was three stories high, covered an entire city block, and had a floorplan that would confound even the most experienced architect. the third floor was a sort of labyrinth, with windowless rooms, doors opening to nowhere, stairs leading to nowhere, and many more oddities. This was where Holmes committed his murders, torturing his victims and sending their bodies down secret passageways to the basement where they were either burned or dissected and sold to medical schools. when the World’s fair concluded, Holmes left Chicago looking for more opportunities to increase his wealth and his victim count. when he was caught in an insurance fraud scheme with his associate Benjamin Pitezel, who he had killed along with three of Pitezel’s children, Holmes was tracked and finally arrested in Boston. after his arrest, the Castle was searched and authorities began uncovering evidence of some of the most gruesome crimes ever committed. after a trial lasting only five days, Holmes was convicted of murder and sentenced to the gallows on may 7, 1896. the story of H. H. Holmes is perhaps one of the most disturbing, yet fascinating, ventures into the mind of a killer.

Octavius Barron – while Octavius Barron didn’t earn quite as much notoriety as the two killers above, he is notable because at the young age of 18, he was responsible for the first murder in the city of Rochester, new York. William Lyman was a respected man in the city, with a successful job and growing family. on the night of October 20, 1837, he left his office to return home to his wife and four children. He never made it. As Lyman walked toward his house, he was shot in the back of the head at point blank range, robbed of several hundred dollars, and left dead in an alley. Hearing the shot, a young boy living in a house nearby alerted his father, who then called police. while authorities were busy collecting evidence at the crime scene, Barron was at the local tavern waving Lyman’s money around and boasting of the murder to his friends. It didn’t take long for this cavalier attitude to come to an end, however, as Barron was arrested just hours after pulling the trigger. the case against him was strong, and as he was already known around town as being a habitual gambler and drinker, the young man was easily convicted of the murder. Octavius Barron hung for his crime on June 7, 1838, and with his death justice was served. but the tale doesn’t stop here; though William Lyman’s life had ended, his story continued.

You can learn more about Octavius Barron, William Lyman, and the surprising details of these men’s fates in the documentary Visions: true Stories of the Supernatural by Ad-Hoc Productions. Go to http://www.ad-hoc-productions.com/trailers.html for more information.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area
After the completion of the Hoover Dam, the waters of the Colorado River filled the deep canyons that once towered above the river to create a huge reservoir. This lake, with its 700 miles (1,130 km) of shoreline, is the centerpiece of Lake Mead National Recreation Area, a 1.5-million acre (600,000-ha) tract of land. the focus is on water sports, especially sailing, waterskiing, and fishing. Striped bass and rainbow trout are popular catches. there are also several campgrounds and marinas.

Valley of fire State Park
This spectacularly scenic state park has a remote, desert location some 60 miles (97 km) northeast of Las Vegas. Its name derives from the red sandstone formations that began as huge, shifting sand dunes about 150 million years ago. there are four well-maintained trails across this wilderness, including the Petroglyph Canyon Trail, an easy half-mile (0.8-km) loop, which takes in several fine prehistoric Ancestral Puebloan rock carvings. here, summer temperatures often reach 112F (30C). the best time to visit is in spring or fall.

The nearby town of Overton lies along the Muddy River. Ancestral Puebloan people settled here in around 300 BC but left some 1,500 years later, perhaps because of a long drought.

Archaeologists have unearthed hundreds of prehistoric artifacts in the area since the first digs began in the 1920s. Overton’s Lost City Museum of Archaeology, just outside the town, has a large collection of pottery, beads, woven baskets, and delicate turquoise jewelry.

Mount Charleston
About 45 miles (72 km) northwest of Las Vegas, Mount Charleston rises to 11,918 ft (35,754 m) out of Toiyabe National Forest, clad with pine, mountain mahogany, fir, and aspen. also known as the Spring Mountain Recreation Area, it offers refuge from the Las Vegas summer heat, with a variety of hiking trails and picnic areas. in the wintertime, skiing and snowboarding are popular.

A range of hikes is available, including two demanding trails that snake up to the summit: the 11-mile (18-km) North Loop Trail, and the 9-mile (14-km) South Loop Trail. Easier walks on the forested slopes are also marked, including a one-hour hike up Cathedral Rock. This walk starts from a picnic area at the end of Nevada State Hwy 157.

This is the more southerly of the two byroads leading to Mount Charleston off Hwy 95; the other is Hwy 156, which runs to the Lee Canyon Ski Area, catering to both skiers and snowboarders.

On your way from Los Angeles to the desert you will find Las Vegas, the capital of American gambling industry. Las Vegas is located in the south of Nevada State, approximately 80 km east of Californian border and 50 km west of border with Arizona. Las Vegas is divided into two parts: Strip with its business centre, and Glitter Gulch. Summer is very hot and winter is cold, so the best time to go to the city is autumn and spring.

Its no use staying in Las Vegas for more than three days. but a short visit to the city, especially if you are in Los Angeles, is advisable (its only a 2-3 hour car ride from Los Angeles to Las Vegas). There is a casino in every hotel, from five-star to the cheapest ones. but better book in advance. Local hotels are real state of art Each has its own peculiar feature. for instance, Imperial Palace boasts of its huge concert hall where Elvis Presley used to perform, and an excellent car museum. When you are tired of endless golden bumpers and silk seats, go to medieval-style Excalibur, or pyramid-like Luxor with an artificial underwater river.

Having found yourself in Las Vegas, the best thing to do is to enjoy your time, play, loose and win. The best place to do that is the night Strip, deep in the ocean of multicoloured lights. MGM Grand Hotel guests don’t even have to go outside: the whole week won’t be enough to visit its casinos, cinemas, 2 concert halls, 6 restaurants, 2 swimming pools, 4 cocktail halls, 10 tennis courts and a shopping mall.

You can go to see a gigantic neon clown sitting on the Circus-Circus roof. There is a Grand Slam Canyon small attraction park (now Adventuredome) found next to it. The square formed by Fremont and Main Streets (in the city centre) is known as Glitter Gulch. first neon displays appeared here as early as in 1929, and now this district is drowning in neon lights. Some of the city’s most known casinos are located in the district. Those are Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino, and Gold Spike. Local shops sell lots of souvenirs. The district’s important attraction is Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Historic Park – its monuments, photos and ruins tell the story of the Mormons who lived here in the 19th century. The Mirage is another place of interest. It’s a small tropic forest with an artificial volcano, surrounded by a lagoon. There are 54 waterfalls, a huge swimming pool and an aquarium inhabited by about 1000 fish species.

Car fans can visit Palace Auto Museum with a collection of cars that previously belonged to celebrities, including cars of several American Presidents. The museum is located at Imperial Palace Casino.

Hoover Dam is a huge dam, a true architecture masterpiece built not far from the city. Its one of the world’s highest dams. behind it is a huge 180-km long reservoir. This is an excellent place for rowing, water skiing, diving and fishing. The dam is located south-east from the city centre and there is Red Rock Canyon 20 miles west of it.

Overton is a calm small town 2 hours ride from here, which boasts of its museum with ancient exhibits. There are several hotels, bars and shops found in the city. Travel north, and you will get to ancient Indian settlements – Anasazi Indian which forms a part of Lost City Museum. Some exhibits are several thousand years old

And, finally, make a trip to Grand Canyon National Park, located several hours ride from Las Vegas. A truly spectacular view

Cheesecake Factory Training excerpt:

The firm spends an average of $2,000 on training per hourly worker each year. Everyone within the organization benefits from training and development initiatives. Servers get two weeks of on-the-job training. Candidates vying for a managerial position receive 12-week development courses. even dishwashers are included in training initiatives.one way the company measures its return on investment is by examining turnover rates, which are about 15 percent below the industry average of 106 percent. Workforce development programs also contribute to high consumer satisfaction rates, loyalty and repeat visits.

Much of the company’s training efforts, as one might expect, center on its serving staff. Servers are on the front line. they are our public face, Wensing says. Servers are a key component in the Cheesecake Factory experience-the hassle-free, friendly and fun dining that Oscar and Evelyn Overton envisioned. and since servers make up 40 percent of the total workforce, the company takes their training seriously.

What is amazing about this excerpt is indicative of the value that high-end companies place on training. when was the last time you heard about dishwashers getting training? How about wait staff having two solid weeks of training? As for their management training, it is ongoing and extensive.

What does this translate into? A great customer experience. lower turnover. Happier employees. most importantly, is higher revenue. Hard to argue with a successful business model.

Achilles Tendonitis – Prevention and Treatment

Filed in overton uk Leave a comment

The Achilles tendon is the muscle at the back of the calf which connects the heel bone to the calf muscle. Famously named after the Ancient Greek here Achilles whose mother Thetis tried to make him invulnerable by dipping him into the river Styx which flowed through the underworld. however, she held him by the heel which the water did not touch, and this spot remained vulnerable. Nowadays we use the term Achilles Heel to refer to a person’s weak spot. for many athletes and runners today, the Achilles tendon really is their Achilles Heel.

Symptoms

It’s possible for the tendon to become inflamed, and even for it to partially or completely rupture. A complete rupture is normally indicated by being unable to lift your heel off the ground or to point the toes. You may even hear (and will most certainly feel) the pop as it ruptures. Less severe damage is indicated by pain when pointing the foot up or down.

Prevention

The best way to prevent Achilles tendon injuries is to warm-up before starting to exercise. The next time you see pro athletes on TV, watch their routines before the event starts. You’ll clearly see lots of stretching of calf muscles, standing on tiptoe and small squat jumps. In some sports events you will probably even see trainers bending the athlete’s feet to and fro to stretch the muscles. these are all great things to do before exercising, and if you’re prone to Achilles trouble you should do discrete exercises several times a day to strengthen the muscles.

Causes of Achilles Tendinitis

There are a number of reasons for Achilles tendon injuries, many of them working in combination with each other, including overdoing training, poorly selected shoes, different shoes or running surface, flat feet and poor gait while running

Treatment

If you’ve completely or partially ruptured the tendon, then an immediate visit to the hospital will be needed, and you will probably be looking at surgery to re-attach the tendon or sew it back together. if you’re lucky, you’ll be looking at just a few months in pot. whatever happens, you won’t be doing any serious exercise for at least six months.

For less serious injuries, you must immediately cut back or stop your training schedule. Muscles cannot recover if you punish them when damaged, and if you do carry on you could end up with a serious rupture. There’s plenty of other ways to exercise, swimming and upper-body resistance training in the gym being excellent examples.

If you feel pain after training, apply an ice pack or kold blue bandage immediately. You can also take a mild anti-inflammatory drug like Ibuprofen or Aspirin. Bear in mind that you should not take anti-inflammatories for more than a few days – do not exceed the recommended dose. if after a few days you’re still in pain then get medical advice.

And finally, try and address the root cause of the problem. make sure you have correctly fitting shoes and use a pair of cushioned insoles specifically designed for sport. these are available from High Street chemists, but are considerably cheaper from a specialist supplier. if that doesn’t help, try and get your doctor to refer you to a podiatrist for a specialist opinion.

So that’s it, ease up and address the cause, or carry on training and make it worse. Think long-term.
