Famous Killers – Prominent Murderers of the 1800s

Filed in overton uk Leave a comment

Throughout history, murderers have always seemed to rivet the attention of the public. Hapless victims, their calculated killers, and all the gruesome details of the crime seem to fascinate most people, and the trials are oftentimes sensational events that attract the masses. Killers committing their heinous crimes during the 19th century were no different than the ones of today, but a few of these criminals stand out in history.

Champ Ferguson – the story of Champ Ferguson is set in the mountains of Tennessee during the height of the American Civil War. For reasons not completely clear, Ferguson became a staunch supporter of the Rebel cause; some say Union soldiers raped his wife and daughter, while others say that the Confederacy promised him clemency on an existing murder charge if he promised his support. whatever his reasons were, Ferguson became one of the most notorious and feared guerrillas in Tennessee, and also one of the most prolific killers of Union soldiers and supporters in the area. Noted for his sadistic tendencies when he found a new victim, Ferguson is estimated to have killed over 100 people, though he was only tried for the murders of 53. Ferguson was arrested and tried for murder in may of 1865, creating something of a spectacle for a public eager to see him sentenced to death. though Ferguson freely admitted to committing the many murders, he maintained that his acts were part of military activities and he only killed those who would have killed him. Ferguson was convicted of war crimes and sentenced to hang on October 20, 1865. His death closed the chapter of one of the South’s most notorious guerrilla fighters, feared by some and revered by others.

H. H. Holmes – known by many as America’s first documented serial killer, H. H. Holmes is responsible for the deaths of as many as 100 people, though he confessed to only 27 of those murders. Born in new Hampshire in 1860 under the name Herman Webster Mudgett, Holmes is best known for the time he spent in Chicago during the World’s fair in 1893. after graduating from medical school in Michigan, Holmes moved to Chicago to practice pharmacy. Dispensing medicine, however, was not high on his priority list, and instead he became involved in a number of shady business deals swindling people out of their money. in 1893, construction began on the Castle, which would serve as his home/office, a hotel for visitors to the fair, and ultimately, his killing grounds. the building was three stories high, covered an entire city block, and had a floorplan that would confound even the most experienced architect. the third floor was a sort of labyrinth, with windowless rooms, doors opening to nowhere, stairs leading to nowhere, and many more oddities. This was where Holmes committed his murders, torturing his victims and sending their bodies down secret passageways to the basement where they were either burned or dissected and sold to medical schools. when the World’s fair concluded, Holmes left Chicago looking for more opportunities to increase his wealth and his victim count. when he was caught in an insurance fraud scheme with his associate Benjamin Pitezel, who he had killed along with three of Pitezel’s children, Holmes was tracked and finally arrested in Boston. after his arrest, the Castle was searched and authorities began uncovering evidence of some of the most gruesome crimes ever committed. after a trial lasting only five days, Holmes was convicted of murder and sentenced to the gallows on may 7, 1896. the story of H. H. Holmes is perhaps one of the most disturbing, yet fascinating, ventures into the mind of a killer.

Octavius Barron – while Octavius Barron didn’t earn quite as much notoriety as the two killers above, he is notable because at the young age of 18, he was responsible for the first murder in the city of Rochester, new York. William Lyman was a respected man in the city, with a successful job and growing family. on the night of October 20, 1837, he left his office to return home to his wife and four children. He never made it. As Lyman walked toward his house, he was shot in the back of the head at point blank range, robbed of several hundred dollars, and left dead in an alley. Hearing the shot, a young boy living in a house nearby alerted his father, who then called police. while authorities were busy collecting evidence at the crime scene, Barron was at the local tavern waving Lyman’s money around and boasting of the murder to his friends. It didn’t take long for this cavalier attitude to come to an end, however, as Barron was arrested just hours after pulling the trigger. the case against him was strong, and as he was already known around town as being a habitual gambler and drinker, the young man was easily convicted of the murder. Octavius Barron hung for his crime on June 7, 1838, and with his death justice was served. but the tale doesn’t stop here; though William Lyman’s life had ended, his story continued.

You can learn more about Octavius Barron, William Lyman, and the surprising details of these men’s fates in the documentary Visions: true Stories of the Supernatural by Ad-Hoc Productions. Go to http://www.ad-hoc-productions.com/trailers.html for more information.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area
After the completion of the Hoover Dam, the waters of the Colorado River filled the deep canyons that once towered above the river to create a huge reservoir. This lake, with its 700 miles (1,130 km) of shoreline, is the centerpiece of Lake Mead National Recreation Area, a 1.5-million acre (600,000-ha) tract of land. the focus is on water sports, especially sailing, waterskiing, and fishing. Striped bass and rainbow trout are popular catches. there are also several campgrounds and marinas.

Valley of fire State Park
This spectacularly scenic state park has a remote, desert location some 60 miles (97 km) northeast of Las Vegas. Its name derives from the red sandstone formations that began as huge, shifting sand dunes about 150 million years ago. there are four well-maintained trails across this wilderness, including the Petroglyph Canyon Trail, an easy half-mile (0.8-km) loop, which takes in several fine prehistoric Ancestral Puebloan rock carvings. here, summer temperatures often reach 112F (30C). the best time to visit is in spring or fall.

The nearby town of Overton lies along the Muddy River. Ancestral Puebloan people settled here in around 300 BC but left some 1,500 years later, perhaps because of a long drought.

Archaeologists have unearthed hundreds of prehistoric artifacts in the area since the first digs began in the 1920s. Overton’s Lost City Museum of Archaeology, just outside the town, has a large collection of pottery, beads, woven baskets, and delicate turquoise jewelry.

Mount Charleston
About 45 miles (72 km) northwest of Las Vegas, Mount Charleston rises to 11,918 ft (35,754 m) out of Toiyabe National Forest, clad with pine, mountain mahogany, fir, and aspen. also known as the Spring Mountain Recreation Area, it offers refuge from the Las Vegas summer heat, with a variety of hiking trails and picnic areas. in the wintertime, skiing and snowboarding are popular.

A range of hikes is available, including two demanding trails that snake up to the summit: the 11-mile (18-km) North Loop Trail, and the 9-mile (14-km) South Loop Trail. Easier walks on the forested slopes are also marked, including a one-hour hike up Cathedral Rock. This walk starts from a picnic area at the end of Nevada State Hwy 157.

This is the more southerly of the two byroads leading to Mount Charleston off Hwy 95; the other is Hwy 156, which runs to the Lee Canyon Ski Area, catering to both skiers and snowboarders.

Spending Your Time in Las Vegas

On your way from Los Angeles to the desert you will find Las Vegas, the capital of American gambling industry. Las Vegas is located in the south of Nevada State, approximately 80 km east of Californian border and 50 km west of border with Arizona. Las Vegas is divided into two parts: Strip with its business centre, and Glitter Gulch. Summer is very hot and winter is cold, so the best time to go to the city is autumn and spring.

Its no use staying in Las Vegas for more than three days. but a short visit to the city, especially if you are in Los Angeles, is advisable (its only a 2-3 hour car ride from Los Angeles to Las Vegas). There is a casino in every hotel, from five-star to the cheapest ones. but better book in advance. Local hotels are real state of art Each has its own peculiar feature. for instance, Imperial Palace boasts of its huge concert hall where Elvis Presley used to perform, and an excellent car museum. When you are tired of endless golden bumpers and silk seats, go to medieval-style Excalibur, or pyramid-like Luxor with an artificial underwater river.

Having found yourself in Las Vegas, the best thing to do is to enjoy your time, play, loose and win. The best place to do that is the night Strip, deep in the ocean of multicoloured lights. MGM Grand Hotel guests don’t even have to go outside: the whole week won’t be enough to visit its casinos, cinemas, 2 concert halls, 6 restaurants, 2 swimming pools, 4 cocktail halls, 10 tennis courts and a shopping mall.

You can go to see a gigantic neon clown sitting on the Circus-Circus roof. There is a Grand Slam Canyon small attraction park (now Adventuredome) found next to it. The square formed by Fremont and Main Streets (in the city centre) is known as Glitter Gulch. first neon displays appeared here as early as in 1929, and now this district is drowning in neon lights. Some of the city’s most known casinos are located in the district. Those are Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino, and Gold Spike. Local shops sell lots of souvenirs. The district’s important attraction is Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Historic Park – its monuments, photos and ruins tell the story of the Mormons who lived here in the 19th century. The Mirage is another place of interest. It’s a small tropic forest with an artificial volcano, surrounded by a lagoon. There are 54 waterfalls, a huge swimming pool and an aquarium inhabited by about 1000 fish species.

Car fans can visit Palace Auto Museum with a collection of cars that previously belonged to celebrities, including cars of several American Presidents. The museum is located at Imperial Palace Casino.

Hoover Dam is a huge dam, a true architecture masterpiece built not far from the city. Its one of the world’s highest dams. behind it is a huge 180-km long reservoir. This is an excellent place for rowing, water skiing, diving and fishing. The dam is located south-east from the city centre and there is Red Rock Canyon 20 miles west of it.

Overton is a calm small town 2 hours ride from here, which boasts of its museum with ancient exhibits. There are several hotels, bars and shops found in the city. Travel north, and you will get to ancient Indian settlements – Anasazi Indian which forms a part of Lost City Museum. Some exhibits are several thousand years old

And, finally, make a trip to Grand Canyon National Park, located several hours ride from Las Vegas. A truly spectacular view

Can Your Business Afford Not To Train Your Staff?

Filed in overton uk Leave a comment

Imagine if you only learned after making all your mistakes. It is doubtful that your customers would accept nor appreciate the inconsistent work, and chances are they would probably not return. Professionals know that customer retention is key in satisfying and growing your business.

Training staff has consistently been shown to pay-off for businesses and customers alike and rewards come to those who stay current in the industry through training. when your customers talk to their friends, family, and co-workers, what do you want them to say about your business? About your products? About your staff?

Cheesecake Factory Training excerpt:

The firm spends an average of $2,000 on training per hourly worker each year. Everyone within the organization benefits from training and development initiatives. Servers get two weeks of on-the-job training. Candidates vying for a managerial position receive 12-week development courses. even dishwashers are included in training initiatives.one way the company measures its return on investment is by examining turnover rates, which are about 15 percent below the industry average of 106 percent. Workforce development programs also contribute to high consumer satisfaction rates, loyalty and repeat visits.

Much of the company’s training efforts, as one might expect, center on its serving staff. Servers are on the front line. they are our public face, Wensing says. Servers are a key component in the Cheesecake Factory experience-the hassle-free, friendly and fun dining that Oscar and Evelyn Overton envisioned. and since servers make up 40 percent of the total workforce, the company takes their training seriously.

What is amazing about this excerpt is indicative of the value that high-end companies place on training. when was the last time you heard about dishwashers getting training? How about wait staff having two solid weeks of training? As for their management training, it is ongoing and extensive.

What does this translate into? A great customer experience. lower turnover. Happier employees. most importantly, is higher revenue. Hard to argue with a successful business model.

You need to be asking, How Can Employee Training Impact my Business?

No matter what your role is in the business, mortgage or real estate industry, your business can benefit from proper training. Advanced and continuous training provides professional distinction in any highly competitive industry. The many benefits of training include:

Higher quality of work

Reduced amount of re-work

Improved cycle time and processing turn-times

Improved relations with other industry professionals

Improved image with in your industry, or the real estate and mortgage industry.

All of these benefits not only increase customer satisfaction, but improve employee relations as well. Working for a company that values and invests in skills, knowledge, and growth helps employees realize their value and increases their confidence on the job. It also energies staff and greatly reduces employee turn-over.

Achilles Tendonitis – Prevention and Treatment

Filed in overton uk Leave a comment

The Achilles tendon is the muscle at the back of the calf which connects the heel bone to the calf muscle. Famously named after the Ancient Greek here Achilles whose mother Thetis tried to make him invulnerable by dipping him into the river Styx which flowed through the underworld. however, she held him by the heel which the water did not touch, and this spot remained vulnerable. Nowadays we use the term Achilles Heel to refer to a person’s weak spot. for many athletes and runners today, the Achilles tendon really is their Achilles Heel.

Symptoms

It’s possible for the tendon to become inflamed, and even for it to partially or completely rupture. A complete rupture is normally indicated by being unable to lift your heel off the ground or to point the toes. You may even hear (and will most certainly feel) the pop as it ruptures. Less severe damage is indicated by pain when pointing the foot up or down.

Prevention

The best way to prevent Achilles tendon injuries is to warm-up before starting to exercise. The next time you see pro athletes on TV, watch their routines before the event starts. You’ll clearly see lots of stretching of calf muscles, standing on tiptoe and small squat jumps. In some sports events you will probably even see trainers bending the athlete’s feet to and fro to stretch the muscles. these are all great things to do before exercising, and if you’re prone to Achilles trouble you should do discrete exercises several times a day to strengthen the muscles.

Causes of Achilles Tendinitis

There are a number of reasons for Achilles tendon injuries, many of them working in combination with each other, including overdoing training, poorly selected shoes, different shoes or running surface, flat feet and poor gait while running

Treatment

If you’ve completely or partially ruptured the tendon, then an immediate visit to the hospital will be needed, and you will probably be looking at surgery to re-attach the tendon or sew it back together. if you’re lucky, you’ll be looking at just a few months in pot. whatever happens, you won’t be doing any serious exercise for at least six months.

For less serious injuries, you must immediately cut back or stop your training schedule. Muscles cannot recover if you punish them when damaged, and if you do carry on you could end up with a serious rupture. There’s plenty of other ways to exercise, swimming and upper-body resistance training in the gym being excellent examples.

If you feel pain after training, apply an ice pack or kold blue bandage immediately. You can also take a mild anti-inflammatory drug like Ibuprofen or Aspirin. Bear in mind that you should not take anti-inflammatories for more than a few days – do not exceed the recommended dose. if after a few days you’re still in pain then get medical advice.

And finally, try and address the root cause of the problem. make sure you have correctly fitting shoes and use a pair of cushioned insoles specifically designed for sport. these are available from High Street chemists, but are considerably cheaper from a specialist supplier. if that doesn’t help, try and get your doctor to refer you to a podiatrist for a specialist opinion.

So that’s it, ease up and address the cause, or carry on training and make it worse. Think long-term.

Overton County was established in 1806 and at one time embraced all or portions of the territory that eventually became Fentress, Clay, Pickett, and Putnam counties. Some famous names associated with Overton, and later Fentress, include Davy Crockett, John Sevier, Joseph Copeland, and John M. Clements (father of Mark Twain). since the early records of the counties of Fentress, Pickett, Putnam, and Jackson have all or partially been destroyed, the extant records of Overton County assume special significance. the work in hand contains records of approximately 2,500 early Overton County inhabitants and features abstracts of various classes of records. Principal contents include the following: Abstracts of Deeds, Wills, Grants, and Minutes from Overton County Deed Books; Legislative Petitions, 1801-1860; Officers in the Tennessee Militia, 1807-1811; Pensioners in Overton and Adjoining Counties, 1818-1883; and Index to Overton County Will Books, 1870-1891.this volume is available on our Family Archive CD 7511.
