WINCHESTER INVIATIONAL: Carrollton survives showdown with Greenfield-NW, 52-42

Filed in winchester 22 Comments Off

WINCHESTER — Just two days after playing a physical game against Routt, the Carrollton boys’ basketball team played a rougher game against Greenfield-Northwestern and came away with a 52-42 win in the opening round of the Winchester Invitational Tournament Saturday.

“We didn’t expect anything less,” Carrollton coach Jeff Krumwiede said. “when we found out Wednesday night at the seed meeting that we had drawn Greenfield, we were very concerned about the fact that: A) they are talented; B) they are well coached; and C) if they are ranked lower than we are, they are going to be motivated. so it was a concern for us, and we were fortunate enough to survive.”

Carrollton was shooting double-bonus free throws before the first quarter was over as Greenfield-Northwestern racked up 10 fouls in the first eight minutes.

“We don’t go out saying we are going to have a game where there is going to be 30 fouls,” Krumwiede said. “sixty free throw shots. The officials don’t like it, the fans don’t like it and the coaches don’t like losing players to disqualification.”

The two teams combined for 47 fouls in all. Carrollton starters Jordan Harr and Cody Kraut fouled out in the fourth quarter, as did Greenfield’s Bubba McEvers.

“That was a typical Tigers/Hawks intense battle,” Greenfield-Northwestern coach Joe Pembrook said. “There is really no way to sugar-coat it. it was intense. We didn’t play with a lot of heart and desire on Thursday night. We worked on that yesterday in practice and I thought our kids brought the intensity, (Carrollton) did as well, and that’s what you should expect from a great rivalry like that.”

The two teams combined for 60 free throws. Carrollton was 19-for-32 at the line while Greenfield-Northwestern was 20-for-28.

“We executed, and they did as well,” Pembrook said. “We missed some front ends of one-and-ones that kind of hurt us, but my hat’s off to Carrollton as they executed a little better than we did down the stretch.”

Carrollton lost Joey Coonrod midway through the second quarter when the senior came out of the bottom of a loose-ball pileup with blood streaming down the side of his face. Coonrod cut his head right above his eyebrow.

“We have an extra uniform for blood situations,” Krumwiede said. “then we started stripping the freshmen. The unfortunate part about that is we only had 12 players dress and only 11 available because Cody Leonard is still out with the sore shoulder, so we didn’t have a whole lot more uniforms to go through. We would have been wearing Winchester Wildcat white if it had gone much deeper.”

Coonrod laughed when asked about the jersey situation.

“There probably were a few other players that would have given up their jerseys for me,” Coonrod said. “They are good teammates.”

Coonrod was out for the remainder of the first quarter, but returned at the start of the second quarter with his head bandaged, wearing jersey number 40. he was in and out of the game throughout the second half as the bleeding continued, and started the fourth quarter wearing jersey number 30.

Coonrod required 13 stitches after the game; his status for Tuesday’s game is uncertain. his status for Saturday’s game was certain: he was determined to play.

“I thought I needed to come back in,” Coonrod said. “it was a close game, and it wasn’t like I couldn’t walk or anything.”

Coonrod finished with nine points, including a big 3-point shot at the 6:50 mark in the third quarter that increased Carrollton’s lead to 41-22. The Tigers were forced to play catch-up for the rest of the game.

Krumwiede said he was pleased with the way his players responded with Coonrod out of the game.

“all the times Joey was in the locker room with the trainer, I thought our guys really stepped up and played well,” the coach said.

Carrollton held a two-point edge at 13-11 by the end of the first quarter, then slowly started to pull away in the second. Greenfield tried to claw its way back in, and got as close as 23-20, but never any closer.

Carrollton outscored Greenfield 14-11 in the second quarter and widened the gap by outscoring the Tigers 16-11 in the third quarter. Each team scored nine points in the fourth quarter.

Carrollton’s Tyler Watson and Luke Palan each scored 12 points to lead the Hawks. Isaac Masters led the Tigers with 11 points.

“I can’t say enough about Luke Palan,” Krumwiede said. “he is the one that hit the jump shots and took care of the basketball. he played solid defense and emerged and matured. he is a freshman who has been getting some varsity time and having some spots of excellent play.”

Carrollton will move on to play Griggsville-Perry in the championship bracket Tuesday. Greenfield-Northwestern (5-9) will play Western on Wednesday in the consolation bracket.

Choosing a Great Rifle Scope

Filed in winchester 22 Leave a comment

Finding the best rifle scope for yourself can be nearly as
challenging as stalking the prey itself. with so many
choices and so many options, it’s sometimes difficult to
line up a target. This article will help first of all define
the options and choices you have, and give you a plan for
finding the best rifle scope to buy.

Ultimately the function of any scope is to help aim, give
you an idea of distance to the target, and make acquisition
easier. the best rifle scopes are high-quality, precision
instruments, very light, rugged and with outstanding optics.
To do that there are several features a good rifle scope
must possess. In no particular order, here they are. Not
directly related to the scope, but crucial nonetheless is
your mount. If your scope isn’t securely mounted, with no
opportunity to move, then you’re asking for problems. It’s
worth it to make sure you have a solid, superbly-aligned
mount on which to place your great new scope.

Other factors to consider would be the image and it’s
quality. There are several things to think about in this
regard. It’s just vital that the optics deliver as much
light as possible to the eyepiece. the more light you have
to work with, the sharper the resolution and eventually the
shot. This is one reason why larger objective lens scopes
(50mm) have become more popular recently, as the larger the
light gathering capability, the more you have to work with.
Lens quality is a huge issue, too, and can be detected by
any distortion visible around the edges. Lens coatings are
applied to quality optics to reduce reflection causing glare
and help gather light for a crisper, brighter image. Don’t
buy a lens that’s not at least multi-coated.

Adjustment capability is also important. A good scope will
have little or no movement of the reticle, nor should it.
You don’t want your aim reference point changing from one
shot to the next. Check for Parallax error as well. This is
when slight changes in eye position change the aim of the
scope. you can expect most quality rifle scopes to be
parallax error-free to 100 yards. Magnification of the
target image is another item to consider. If you’re hunting
with a very powerful gun over a great distance this may be
something you would want. Most the time however you don’t
want any magnification, as it fiddles with your natural
ability to reckon distance drop.

Finally make sure the scope you buy is watertight; sealed
tight as a drum, and totally fogproof. Keeping these things
in mind while you’re search for a new rifle scope will help
you save money, heartache, and missed shots

I Like Music and Reading Festival 2009

Filed in winchester 22 Leave a comment

I Like Music headed along to Reading 2009 to chat to the crowd, find out their musical highlights, their 2009 festival delights and much more…

Random MomentsAh, the joys that come with the no strings attached, forget-the-real-world, stay up past your bedtime party atmosphere of the festival. Simply cast your eyes away from the stage and you are sure to see something that defies explanation and exceeds utter brilliance all in one go…

We saw a man being arrested because he wouldn’t let go of his beer. Simon, 18, Kent

Lots of men in dresses. Why do boys always wear dresses at festivals? Jess, 22, Winchester

We saw people doing human jousting. there were four guys on each others shoulders. The ones on top had beer boxes on their heads and sticks made out of taped beer cans. Mike, 16, Swindon

My mate was sick in his own hands during Placebo. Jack, 18, Woking

It’s my friend’s first festival, she got caught in a circle pit! she just wandered un-knowingly into the calm before the storm! Louise, 21, Oxford

Festival OpinionsFrom first timers, locals and veterans, we kept it simple – What’s good? What’s not?

This is my first festival. And I’ll be coming back next year. And the year after that. James, 18, Basingstoke

I’d like to see more incorporation of Drum n Bass, I reckon it goes well with festivals and Rock. Alex, 30, Reading

I been coming for the last twenty years. It’s gotten milder. Less heavy bands. last year was one of the best though. Metallica were fantastic. Rage were incredible. Steve, 54, Cardiff

Prodigy should have headlined instead of Arctic Monkeys. Kaiser Chiefs should have headlined instead of Kings of Leon. Tom, 18, Basingstoke

Everyone’s been really friendly. The toilets are a lot better here than at Benicassim! Penny, 23, Newcastle

The Arctic Monkeys debate:The Saturday night headliners seemed to have caused a stir amongst most punters we chatted to. though their third studio album Humbug went straight into the UK album chart at number one, some still needed convincing…

Arctic Monkey’s were a bit of a let down after The Prodigy. they kind of bowed out. Basically they couldn’t follow The Prodigy and I think they just gave a half hearted performance. A lot of people left. Jennifer, 24, The Wirrell

I came back for Arctic Monkey’s. they were awesome, they sounded awesome! they were a bit slow and they didn’t play all their biggest hits, which is perhaps why people didn’t like them as much. Scott, 18, Surrey

They just played loads of stuff I’d never heard. Ben, 16, Brighton

I wanted to love them, but it just didn’t live up. they didn’t even play Mardy Bum. Tony, 34, London

Them Crooked Vultures Secret GigAll hail the power trio of the recently formed super group. Foo Fighter’s Dave Grohl on drums, Queens of The Stone Age’s Josh Homme on vocals and guitar, and Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones on bass. With rumours of an appearance circling after a last minute support slot for Arctic Monkeys the week before, the lucky few with their ears to the ground stumbled upon a Reading Festival first for Them Crooked Vultures.

I missed it and now I want to go home. Louis, 17, Kent

We worked it out from the line up. there was a free slot. Patrick Wolf had like two hours. During Eagles of Death Metal they showed Dave Grohl on the screen at the side of the stage, then they went toward the back and Josh Homme was there too. Mark, 17, Chichester

I got lots of drink spillt on me and I was nailed into the sides, but it was fucking quality. Stephen, 17, Chichester

It sounded quite like Queens of The Stone Age. Josh was good. Dave was better, everyone loves Dave. Alex, 18, Bristol

They played for about 45 minutes. they looked good, really together. Everytime Dave Grohl came on the screen everyone just went mental. they didn’t say much, just the names of the songs. Jake, 20, Bath

Reading 2009 Crowd Choice Award…As un-biased as we are, the I Like Music choice leans toward the greatness that is Radiohead, who stormed through what could be described as a greatest hits set, opening with Creep and including new track These are My Twisted Words. we caught up with festival goers prior to the weekend’s closing set to see who had royaly rocked their socks so far…

The Prodigy were absolutley epic. they were the best thing by far. You couldn’t move! And there were loads of circle pits! plus they played loads of their old stuff! Sarah, 23, Oxford

The Prodigy. The Prodigy. The Prodigy. everyone was going mental! Dan, 19, Milton Keynes

The Prodigy are just one of those bands aren’t they? They’re so loud. they fucking go for it. You can’t not love them. Tom, 20, Milton Keynes

The Prodigy should have headlined. The Arctic Monkey’s didn’t stand a chance after that. Dave, 21, Luton

Eagles of Death Metal were superb. Absolutley superb. Sam, 16, Newbury

Definitely Eagles of Death Metal. they absolutley caned it. Luke, 16, Bracknell

Eagles. By far my favourite all festival. Ed, 23, Norfolk

The Gaslight Anthem killed it. George, 18, Andover

Alexisonfire, I never thought I’d like them, but live they were incredible. their singer/guitarist is really good. Rich, 18, Northampton

Placebo of course, me and my mate just stood mesmerised by the drumming. Matt, 18, Oxford

When I grow up I want to be Karen-O. Haha! Will, 18, Hertfordshire

Winchester Attractions & Accommodation

Filed in winchester 22 Leave a comment

Winchester is the county town of Hampshire and a popular destination for both domestic and international travelers. Perfect for exploring city attractions, whilst also being located within close proximity to the famously gorgeous Hampshire countryside, Winchester is a great destination for families, couples, friends and seniors alike.

Steeped in rich history, exploring Winchester is a fun and educational adventure that can be enjoyed by all. Famous for Winchester Cathedral, Winchester Castle and many other monuments, there’s almost too much to discover during a trip to this historical and picturesque city. to help you get an idea of what it has to offer, I’ve compiled a list of my favorite things to to and my favorite places to stay in Winchester.

Winchester Cathedral

Built in 1079, the breathtaking Winchester Cathedral is the longest in Europe and a must-see landmark if you’re taking a trip to Winchester. Marvel at the medieval carvings, take a guided tour or simply enjoy a coffee at the Cathedral Cafe.

Winchester Castle

Home to the Great Hall and legendary Arthurian round Table, Winchester Castle is well worth a visit, particularly for history buffs.

Renegades’ Church making strides in pro career

Filed in winchester 22 Leave a comment

‘Dream come true’ for 810th overall pick by WILLIAM MONTGOMERY Published: 2:00 AM – 07/17/11

FISHKILL — as his senior year at Florida Atlantic University was winding down this spring, Raymond Church’s parents kept asking him, “What if the draft doesn’t go your way? What’s your backup plan?”

Church, a 22-year-old second baseman from West Palm Beach, graduated with a business degree but knew it was going to be professional baseball or bust.

“I kept telling them, until the draft is over, I’m not having a backup plan,” Church said last week at Dutchess Stadium. “My dream is to be here playing professional baseball.”

Hometown: West Palm Beach, Fla.

Drafted: 810th overall in the 26th round

Palm Beach State College: Batted over .340 in two seasons (2008-09), totalled 12 doubles, three triples and 43 RBI.

Florida Atlantic University: started all 57 games his senior season (2011), batted .351 with six home runs, 15 doubles and 32 RBI…started 115 straight games at second base over two years…tied school record with a 24-game hitting streak…drew 45 walks in 2010, the most of any player in the Sun Belt Conference…had nine RBI in one Sun Belt tournament game in 2010, named to Sun Belt All-Tournament and Gainesville All-Regional teams that season.

Valley League: Played in 40 games with Winchester in 2010, batted .314 with four home runs and 34 RBI.

Monday: vs. Connecticut, 11 a.m. (Early bird game)

Tuesday: vs. Staten Island, 7:05 p.m. (Irish night)

Wednesday: vs. Staten Island, 7:05 p.m. (American heroes)

Thursday: at Staten Island, 7:00 p.m.

Friday: at Staten Island, 7:00 p.m.

Saturday: vs. Mahoning Valley, 7:05 p.m. (Postgame fireworks)

Sunday: vs. Mahoning Valley, 5:05 p.m. (Replica jersey to first 1,000 fans 12-and-under)

Unlike some of his Hudson Valley Renegades teammates, Church wasn’t a can’t-miss prospect in high school. he played two years of junior college baseball at Palm Beach State College, batting more than .340 in both seasons there. Church then landed at Florida Atlantic University, where he started 60 games, hit .329 with 10 home runs and 46 RBI his junior year. this spring, he batted .351 in 57 starts, turned 33 double plays and had a .974 fielding percentage, leading his coaches to believe he likely would be taken in the 2011 first-year player draft.

“But with the draft, you never know,” Church said. “You absolutely don’t have any clue. you really don’t know until they finally call your name. I had a feeling, I had a good feeling, and I thought I would at least get some type of shot. the Rays took a chance, and I’m going to make the best of it.”

Church waited through each agonizing round, finally hearing his name called when Tampa Bay picked him 810th overall in the 26th round.

“I graduated with a business degree, but honestly, I didn’t know what I was going to do with it,” he said. “I really didn’t — God’s honest truth — I didn’t want to think about it until my draft dreams, until my major league baseball dreams, end. To this day, I’m still not. … Until somebody tells me I can’t play baseball anymore, I’m going to keep playing. That’s all I’ve come to know.”

Assigned to Hudson Valley, Church has stepped right in as the everyday second baseman. He’s batting .243 with five doubles in 19 games played, but has really taken off in July. After hitting .194 in June, Church was batting .294 in July through Friday’s game.

Church is adjusting to living on his own in a new place, something he did for the first time last summer when he played for the Winchester (Va.) Royals of the Valley League and lived with a host family. he had lived at home through his four years of college.

He’ll get a taste of home in early August, as his parents plan to visit Fishkill for a Renegades homestand. In February, he won’t be too far from home, as the Rays’ spring training facility in Port Charlotte, Fla. is about three hours from his family’s home.

For now, Church is just happy to get a chance to play every day for the Renegades. After all, getting drafted allowed him to postpone the thoughts of what he’s going to do with the rest of his life.

“It was a dream come true. the feeling I got was unlike any other,” he said of being selected. “It shows that hard work, most of the time, can get you where you want to be.”
