Coastwide – Heavy winds and surf are forecast for the Southern Oregon Coast through the weekend, and that will put a damper on spring jigging for black rockfish and lingcod. Conditions could simmer down early next week for some early-morning jaunts to near-shore rock piles and kelp beds in search of lingcod. big black or glow-in-the-dark jigs will be best.

The marine aggregate limit in Oregon is seven rockfish a day, plus one cabezon, and the lingcod limit is two a day with a 22-inch minimum.

Chinook salmon fishing opened March 15 and will remain open through April north of Humbug Mountain, but poor ocean conditions have made for a very light showing in the fishery.

Sport crabbers are allowed on the ocean, but few are fishing for Dungeness these days because of treacherous seas. Bay crabbing has been just fair thanks to high runoff from local streams all week. Look for bay crabbing to be poor into next week. All shellfish fishing is open coastwide, but clammers should be mindful of sneaker waves. BROOKINGS – Surfperch fishing was a bust again around the Winchuck River mouth because of rough seas. it will take a few calm days for the perch to move in from beyond the surf line. when they do, catch them with clam necks, prawns, shrimp flies, mussels or plastic shrimp imitations.

GOLD BEACH – Surfperch fishing has been poor at Nesika Beach, but look for good catches soon after the surf subsides. no bay fishing is going on for spring chinook.

WINCHESTER BAY – Sturgeon fishing is slow. Crabbing has been fair, largely because of high freshwater levels in the bay. Chinook fishing is open but effort is very light due to rough seas.

CHARLESTON – Chinook season is open, but little effort so far because of rough seas. the lower area of Charleston has been fair for crabbing. Watch for sneaker waves while jetty fishing.

AGATE – Fishing for legal- and trophy-sized rainbows has not improved due largely to murky water. the lake is full. no gas motors are allowed. Small electric motors are legal.

APPLEGATE – the lake is about two-thirds full, and trolling has been good lately in the upper part of the reservoir for anglers looking for land-locked salmon stocked there. Trolling Flatfish or Triple Teasers should work well for them, and fly-fishing for trout has been good on calm days. cold water has made for relatively poor bass fishing, but fishing crank baits very slowly off points and near the dam will produce smallmouth catches throughout the day. the French Gulch boat ramp is usable. EMIGRANT – Spring anglers are still finding some of the 3,500 legal-sized rainbow trout stocked there late last month, but this week’s storms and barometric changes have slowed trout and bass fishing. the water is murky. more warm days should get the bass on the bite. Fish them with plastic grubs or slowly retrieved crankbaits. Bank anglers fishing near the dam are faring well on worms or PowerBait for trout.

A standing public-health advisory continues about eating all but trout from the lake because of elevated mercury levels.

HOWARD PRAIRIE – the lake is open and early fishing for rainbow trout has been very good in water 10 to 20 feet deep. Bank anglers off the jetty at Howard Prairie Resort have done very well in the early morning with rainbow or chartreuse PowerBait or worms floated off the bottom. Bobbers and worms can work well for suspended fish throughout the day. good bank-fishing access is available at the jetty, along with Klum Landing and Willow Point. Focus on water 10 to 20 feet deep.

HYATT – the lake is fishing well for legal-sized rainbows and some holdover trout from last year. Fishing near the dam and around the Orchard has been good. Trolling is slow, but try Triple Teasers or Wedding Rings with worms. Troll slowly and in the top 10 feet of the water column.

DIAMOND – the lake is fishing very well for ice anglers, particularly around the lodge and in the Cheese Hole. Lots of 16-inchers are in the mix. Try PowerBait off the bottom or a worm dangled six to 10 feet beneath the ice. Fishing in pockets of open water, especially near the pizza parlor, has been very good but access is tough through the snow. Diamond Lake Resort is offering Sno-cat shuttles to and from the open water. South access to the lake is closed, so reach the resort via the north access off Highway 138. the limit is five trout per day until Sunday, when the new eight-fish limit goes into effect, with just one trout longer than 20 inches allowed.

EXPO – Fishing has improved greatly after the recent release of 1,400 legal-sized rainbow trout. find them with Panther Martin lures, worms and single salmon eggs.

LOST CREEK – Trolling for trout improved after the stocking of 25,000 legal-sized rainbow trout a month ago. Focus on catching them near Lost Creek Lake Marina and the Takelma boat ramp. Bank fishing has been best with worms, single salmon eggs or PowerBait. Trolling will pick up even more when the fish get acclimated to the lake. the Stewart State Park boat ramp and the Takelma ramp are open.

FISH – the lake is primarily ice-free around the resort and Forest Service ramp. Angling effort has been low. Worms and chartreuse PowerBait will work best for rainbow trout. the resort is open Fridays through Sundays.

WILLOW LAKE – the lake was stocked with almost 5,000 legal-sized rainbow trout recently, and they have been largely neglected so far by anglers. no county facilities are open at the lake now.

SELMAC – the lake was stocked recently with legal-sized trout, and fishing has been good for them with most baits. Single salmon eggs and cheese have worked well.

LEMOLO – the lake is open to angling and good early fishing for brown trout is happening for those still-fishing with worms or PowerBait or fly-fishers using woolly buggers or leeches.

MEDCO – Fishing for rainbow trout has been good off the bank with PowerBait.

ROGUE – the upper Rogue was high but fishable for late-run winter steelhead, while the middle Rogue remains spotty for spring chinook and the lower Rogue continues to spit out nice catches of springers, but the ration of wild fish in the mix is starting to rise.

That leaves each extreme of the Rogue as equally good bets, with the upper Rogue for steelhead and the lower Rogue for chinook.

In the upper Rogue, anglers have just a few more days to kill wild steelhead over 24 inches. Starting Sunday, all wild steelhead must be released unharmed. most wild steelhead around now are either spawned-out kelts headed downstream or ripe and ready to spawn. Regardless, their meat is of poor quality and release of them is highly recommended.

Flows were at 4,500 cubic feet per second Thursday afternoon at Dodge Bridge, but the color was good enough for fishing. That could change quickly if rains swell tributaries.

Cole Rivers Hatchery crews released 43 winter steelhead Wednesday at the Gold Hill boat ramp. Forty-three of them were spawned-out adult females and the last was a wild male. these fish were released so they could return to the ocean and come back next year. So far, hatchery workers have returned to the Rogue more than 900 spawned-out hatchery winter steelhead.

Side-drifting yarn balls scented with egg juice is excellent for steelhead now, while K-11 Kwikfish plugs are also good. Pink and silver is the best color combination. Stay closer to shore and in slower water.

In the middle Rogue, a few anglers are hiking in to Rainie Falls and fishing for spring chinook there, but success has been spotty. the water was flowing at 6,700 cfs at Grants Pass on Thursday, but the color looked good enough for springer fishing. some bank anglers have tried a few different spots, but no real successes have been reported yet.

In the lower Rogue, spring chinook fishing continues to be very good for boat anglers fishing a Brad’s cut Plug rig with an anchovy or sardine. Bankies are using larger Spin-Glo’s. Fishing for boaters has been best from Jim Hunt Creek upstream to Lobster Creek, and then again in the Agness area. good catches have been reported all week despite flows of 9,900 cfs Thursday at Agness. Lots of 20- to 25-pound hatchery fish have been caught so far, but the wild-to-hatchery ratio is changing. where the catch was 70 percent hatchery fish, it is now closer to 50 percent. All wild chinook must be released riverwide.

Flows out of Lost Creek Lake were set to drop from 3,500 cfs Thursday to 3,100 cfs by Sunday.

ILLINOIS – the river is closed to fishing.

APPLEGATE – the river is closed to fishing.

UMPQUA – the South Umpqua and North Umpqua were both high and not fishable Thursday for winter steelhead. the South Umpqua closes to angling Saturday night.

The first few spring chinook were caught in the mainstem below the forks this past week before higher water chased anglers away. Look for more spring chinook to bite when water conditions improve.

ELK/SIXES – both rivers are closed to fishing.

CHETCO – the river is closed.

People I Know: Busy Busy Busy…

Hello! sorry it’s been so long since my last update…but I have an actual excuse. I’ve been busy, trying to be sociable. I know – I’m as surprised as you are. 
But first, there was the J-Man storyline. I hope you enjoyed it! according to Google Analytics, it wasn’t very popular, but I’m glad I did it because it was a bit different – a bit *ahem* metatextual and it was a nice way to bring together a bunch of characters that don’t normally hang out. The story was a good reflection of how some of my drawings make me feel. When I first started, I’d put anything online… whereas now, I’m a bit more selective – which is both a good and bad thing. I had the first J-Man joke ready to upload, but it just really annoyed me because it didn’t seem funny enough. and then the J-Man storyline sort of came from my attempts to make it funny. Or better. plus, I got to draw hands!
So yeah – this week has seen me try to do fun things. I worry I spend too much time at my desk – whether it’s at work or working on drawings. so this week, I tried doing fun things. On Wednesday, I went for a burger and then went to see Sucker Punch. I have no idea what to make of the film. it looked nice but I was pretty confused. The soundtrack was good though. here is one of my favourites:
Also – it was possibly the first time in recent years I’ve been to the cinema and not eaten popcorn…
On Thursday, me and some pals went to the Museum of Childhood for an event about self-publishing. it was really nice and we went to a cute cafe afterwards to catch up on old times. Friday evening was spent at the pub. I was there for a bit too long but I actually enjoyed myself. Hooray. Saturday was spent working on some projects for people that you’ll get to hear about at some point. I blitzed through them and went to see some pals in the park. We sang quite a lot of Rebecca Black’s Friday. Speaking of which…

Then it was Sunday and I went to an effing BBQ! can you believe that! I even spoke to people I didn’t know! and they were nice! 
So…that was my week – pretty crazy, right? and I have more stuff planned! next week will see burgers with pals, a potential birthday party and a pal is coming to visit! I hope I have time to draw comics! oh – and I’m giving serious thought to trying to form a band… although it will be much better than my last attempt.

(More customer reviews)My wife got me this knife for my birthday because I mainly use small and mid-sized knives and have so far avoided getting a taste for the huge Bowies. she wanted to see if I liked this type without spending much. the answer is yes, I like it a lot.

It’s massive and nose-heavy, with the point of balance right at the big full-finger choil in front of the guard. this weight-forward configuration makes the knife very eager to chop, and I immediately complied by destroying some lemons, potatoes, corn cobs, and an old pine 2×6. the edge was shaving-sharp right out of the box, but my abuse resulted in some bright spots where the edge was visibly dinged. I restored it in under a minute with an Accusharp carbide-V sharpening gadget.

The primary bevel is a half-flat or “saber” grind, which emphasizes strength over slicing. Still, the knife excelled at the above-named kitchen tasks, as well as slicing celery, bell peppers, and meat. It was not quite optimal, however, for dicing onions. the thick, heavy blade tended to bind in such firm material and was a bit fatiguing to use. Still, it got the job done, and I found the radically clipped point very nimble and handy for piercing. I only wished I had a coconut to split.

I have my doubts about the edge-holding ability of this knife, as it is made from obviously inexpensive 420-J2 stainless steel subjected to who-knows-what heat treatment, and I have managed to ding it up a bit initially. but it certainly isn’t brittle, which would spell uselessness for a knife like this. I imagine that a few sessions with the Accusharp might re-profile the edge to a more durable angle, but only time will tell.

The package says it is made for the Winchester brand by “Carolina Knife and Tool,” which I hear is a cheaper label of Gerber knives– the Ford to Gerber’s Lincoln, if you will. So I would imagine that they have some idea of how to make a good knife, even if they are doing it in China.

The handle scales are Pakkawood, an engineered wood laminate that behaves much like hardwood but is inert, which is to say that it will not move or shrink or crack. It’s stained to look like rosewood and finished with a tough, glossy lacquer or polyurethane. Together with the brass guard and pins, it makes for a more attractive package than other inexpensive “survival” or “tactical” knives. my only complaint is the finger ridges, a bit of over-engineering that can only detract from the knife’s versatility.

The sheath is heavy, stiff Cordura nylon with plastic reinforcement at the throat and two retaining straps with snaps. It’s not too fancy, just a secure, durable, weatherproof sheath that rides nicely on the belt. It does have a few nasty bits of Hide of the Nauga around the snaps, which is no big deal.

I wouldn’t hesitate to carry this knife in the woods, as long as I could also carry a sharpening gadget like the Accusharp or the Meyerco Sharpen-It to allay my reservations about the blade material. If you had to choose one do-everything backwoods knife, this really would not be a bad choice, as it is capable of heavy chopping as well as more delicate tasks like slicing vegetables. to step up at all in the Bowie market would require triple the price at the very least, and so I’d say this is a great knife for seeing if you’re interested, and it’ll get some work done while you’re at it. It has certainly whetted my appetite for more of these big knives.

Many shooters started off on the venerable .22 caliber rimfire round. It’s a cheap round that’s great for new shooters to learn with, but the .22 long rifle round has one downfall. some weapons encounter feeding issues with the .22lr rimfire ammo. Winchester recently announced the release of their new M-22 round, said to offer more feed reliability with most high-capacity semi auto firearme.

Island Style – The TIBI Outlet on St. Simons Island « Sarah Winchester

The other week I had the pleasure of photographing the Tibi outlet store. Located on the barrier island of St. Simons, GA, the Tibi outlet is tucked away among the live oaks and Spanish moss of the south Georgia coastline.  Tibi owner and designer, Amy Smilovic, originally hails from the island, making it the perfect location for the Tibi outlet.   Tibi’s look has always been one of graphic prints, saturated color and classic design.  One glance around the island and it is easy to see where Amy got her inspiration for Tibi.

Fortunately for me, I have been going to the beach in this area for years and there is nothing better than throwing on a Tibi dress for a night out, after a day in the sun.  Especially when that Tibi dress can be had for a steal from the Tibi outlet.  Along with in season and post season Tibi collections, the outlet offers one of a kind sample pieces.  With its newly renovated and expanded digs, the Tibi shop on St. Simons Island is hardly an “outlet” style shopping experience.  it is modeled after their chic new York locations, but exudes all the charm and warmth of the island.

MCA Yacht Training Certification and Licensing

The Governing body for the high seas all over the world is the MCA, a few years ago they decided due to the growth of yacht sales and the ever growing size of the vessels being launched that the crew controlling the vessels really needed to be Certified or Licensed to operate these Yachts on an ever growing crowded high seas environment and purely for the safety of other vessels on the seas, like the commercial vessels who all require a fully licensed crew to operate. So to drag yacht engineering into the 21st century there are now online training solutions that are set to replace the outdated and antiquated training tactics of the past for Marine Engineers to get MCA certified and licensed, there are now several engineering training courses that are now provided which do not replace a mandatory five-day training modules at an onshore MCA Approved Training Establishment; but it enhances and gives an edge to yacht 4, yacht 3 and yacht 2 engineers prior to the exam date.

Recently one of the largest yachting magazines in the world the ‘yacht crew report’ highlighted the desperate need for an alternative, advanced online training solution and presense to revolutionize over 300 years of antiquated training techniques and offering a better way for marine engineers to get certified as Yacht 2 engineer, Yacht 3 engineer or Yacht 4 engineer. it also highlighted the savings on training budgets and manhours for businesses and students who will inevitably save thousands of dollars by not traveling half way around the world to an MCA approved training establishment and preventing the loss of valuable staff working hours, basically reducing the training budget for yacht owners.

There are currently many Yacht training courses available to engineers at various stages of curricula to support students or marine engineers to advance, from the basic AEC Advanced Engineer course through yacht 4 marine diesel engineering, yacht 4 Operations and Procedures and Yacht 4 auxiliary Equipment courses to the Yacht 3 Engineer stats and ops and Yacht 2 math and applied mechanics courses, many others are available and do not require any eligibility requirements. Hopefully Yacht engineering online is now becoming one of the mopst popular ways for yacht and marine engineers to get certified and licensed enhancing the certification routes for all students that require it to gain there success more rapidly and at there own pace.

How to Use a Digital Wall Safe

When you think of a wall safe you normally think of a vault with a secret combination hidden behind a large portrait. No one ever thinks of a digital wall safe and how user friendly it can be. They come with soft keypads that you enter your PIN numbers with. if you want to have a rough idea it’s kind of like using a touch tone phone. you can buy yourself a digital safe with or without an LCD screen that shows your code numbers as you punch them in. This wouldn’t be a great idea if you have people around you and you don’t want them to see the numbers. There are also additional options like having a magnetic credit card swap reader. you will need an official bank card to program your safe with. once your safe has been programmed with your personal card no one else can use another card to open your safe. It will only recognize yours and will only allow access to that specific card.

With a digital safe you can always reprogram it if you want to change your PIN number or code. you can also reprogram the card reader to read a new bank card. Digital safes are available in many brands and models to choose from. if you have a particular need then you should find one for it. if you need one just for jewelry you can choose from different types of jewelry safe boxes. most of the time people purchase an all purpose traditional size wall safe that can store many of their possessions like camera, jewelry, passports and money.

Most safes have secret compartments under a velvet or carpet lower surface with two adjustable shelves. A digital wall safe can differ in dimensions and how many cubic inches it has inside. The frame of the safe will basically be the same but the depth is what gives you more storage room. These safes also need 4 AA batteries for them to function properly.

Winchester’s New 42Max 22lr Ammunition

Winchester Australia has just announced 2 new lines of 22lr rimfire ammunition to be release on the Australian market.

The 42Max ammo will come in two varieties: a high velocity Powerpoint 42Max & a Subsonic 42Max lead hollow point.

Both of these projectiles have a 42grain projectile with the Powerpoint’s being copper plated and the Subsonic being lead.

The Powerpoint’s velocity will be 1320fps (tradtional powerpoint ammo is 1280fps) and the Subsonic’s being 1065fps.

So with the powerpoint you will get a 40fps increase in speed with a 2 grain heavier projectile which translates to a 16ft/lb (146ft/lb vs 162 ft/lb) of energy increase over the traditional Powerpoint ammunition. So it is over a 10% increase in muzzle energy whilst maintaining a very similar trajectory to the traditional Powerpoints.

These new varieties of 42Max 22lr Ammunition will be in gun shops in April.

Another cool thing that Winchester Australia is doing is offering 100,000 rounds of free 42Max ammunition so people can test the quality of the new rounds. all you have to do is buy a Winchester product at one of the selected gun shops in Australia and get your 5 free rounds which should give you an idea of how well the stuff will shoot in your rifle.

I think this is one of the more open things an ammunition maker has done for releasing new ammo. it is basically a beta testing program for Ammo and what could be cooler than that?
