With nearly 800 votes cast, I have no choice but to call the winners for the first round of Division 1 matchups, and I have to tell you I’m sorely disappointed. this round should have been rife with upsets. What is this persistent fascination with the utterly outdated Model 94, a barrel-light pipsqueak chambered in cowboy-action rounds unsuited for deer by today’s standards? by the way, the Savage 99, always touted as a great brush gun, is in truth a thick-wristed, long-barreled slow-cycler that’s too clunky to the shoulder for thick-woods hunting, although I’ll admit those are mute points when you can’t find ammo for most of the chamberings. and I suppose you’ll go chalk with the 336 in Division II as well. Am I right? that overweight second cousin to the obsolete 94….

Okay enough of that. Check the date. seriously, I own one of each. so the perfectly reasonable winners are the Winchester Model 94, Savage 99, Remington Model Seven (in upset fashion), and Marlin Model 308MXLR.

Now to Division II. Here are the rankings:

Survival Rifle Ammunition

Filed in rifles winchester Leave a comment

It was the last weekend of regular deer season, saturday night. a long time member of the deer lease drives up to the camp, and backs his truck up to the scales. that is usually a sure sign that there is a deer in the back of the truck. they get the doe weighed and are stringing it up to skin when I walk out there.

As the skinning of the deer proceeds, there are a few of us standing around helping and watching. the topic turns to the cost of ammunition and bullet performance.

Like a lot of hunters, I tend to buy the cheapest ammo on the shelf – and that is usually Remington Core-Lokt. over the past 14,,,, 15+ years Core-Lokt is about all that I have bought and shot deer with. During that time I have had no complaints. there is usually a hole going in and a larger hole going out.

The guy who shot the doe goes on to talk about Remington Core-Lokt and how he has since switched to Winchester softpoints. the rifle the guy used was a 270,,,, I dont remember the exact make or model. After talking for a little while, the person who shot the deer said that he has not been happy with the performance of the Remington Core-Lokt lately and that he felt it may not be expanding like it should. So he switched to the Winchester softpoints.

I can say one thing about the doe that was being skinned, there was a massive amount of bruising, bleeding and tissue damage. It was like the whole area where the bullet went through had residual damage to the surrendering tissue.

Doing a mental comparison of the deer that was shot with a 270 and Winchester softpoints, and the deer that my son took a couple of years ago with a Marlin 30-30 and Remington Core-Lokt – the 270 caused more tissue damage – both rifles were shooting 150 grain bullet. the 270 travels at a higher velocity then the 30-30, but the 30-30 is a larger in diameter bullet.

Then there is a buddy of mine that shoots a 308 and only shoots Winchester Silvertips – which can get a “little” expensive. He feels that his 308 rifle gives the best accuracy with Winchester Silvertip as compared to anything else. Let say that your rifle gives 1.2 inches groups at 100 yards with cheap ammo, and .75 inch groups at 100 yards with expensive ammo. Is the $20 dollar price difference really worth it?  if your making 400+ yard shots, then maybe .75 at 100 yards is important to you.  but for “most” people, especially in the southern part of the US were we have pine forest and thick underbrush, your shots are going to be around 100 yards or less.

The idea of stockpiling 3, 4 or even 5 different types of ammunition for 1 caliber does no appeal to me.  I do not want to have a box of Remington 150 grain, a box of Remington 180 grain, a box of Federal 150 grain, and some cheap off brand.  if price allows it, then maybe 2 or 3 different types of ammo for the same caliber – but only if there is not a big difference in the zero of those calibers.  Don’t buy one brand name that hits 2 inches different then everything else you have.

If you want to stockpile cheap target ammo and expensive hunting ammo, I suggest trial and error.  Buy a few brand names and go to the range.  fire off a few rounds of brand a, then brand B, then brand C.  Compare the results and see which ones hit nearest each other.

22 long rifle -  my son and I are going through different brands of 22 to see which ones work well in the Marlin model 60 and the Ruger 10/22.  It does not do any good to stockpile 22 long rifle ammo that works well in only 1 rifle.  Not when you have 2 or three different 22 rifles.

During our test we have found that certain types of 22 long rifle does not work well in the marlin model 60.  With the misfires and jams, its just not worth it to stockpile stuff that does not work well.

Types of 22 long rifle being stockpiled:Remington Golden Bullet – 525 roundsFederal Value Pack – 550 roundsFederal Champion Value pack – 525 roundsFederal Auto-Match – 325 roundsWinchester Bulk Pack – 333 rounds

22 long rifle is probably the easiest ammunition to stockpile for a SHTF situation.  22 long rifle is cheap, its light, popular, goes on sale from time to time, has a low report, no muzzle blast and is very effective on small game like rabbits.

308 Winchester – For my DS Arms SA58 FAL and my nephews Remington bolt action, at this point and time all I am stockpiling is Remington Core-Lokt 150 grain.  at $16 – $18 for a box of 20, Core-Lokt is not dirt cheap, but its not expensive either, and its very effective on deer sized game.

This past hunting season my nephew took a nice sized doe with his Remington Model 7 chambered in 308 Winchester with a 150 grain Remington Core-Lokt.  from point of impact, the doe made it about 15 feet and hit the ground.

The 308 Winchester makes an excellent survival cartridge – its lightweight, popular, easy to find, accurate, low recoil, available in a wide variety of rifles – everything from bolt actions to semi-autos.  Loaded with 150 grain soft points, the 308 Winchester should be able to take any non-dangerous game in North America.

Video of the DS Arms SA-58 FN/FAL in 308 Winchester / 7.62 NATO.

30-30 Winchester – my family has a total of 3 Marlin 336 30-30 rifles, so its important for us to stockpile ammunition that is effective, but does not cost a fortune.  if some kind of SHTF situation happens, we want enough 30-30 stockpiled to be able to put all three rifles in the woods.  if we bought the most expensive 30-30 on the market, the amount of 30-30 we could stockpile would be limited.  mostly what we stockpile is the Remington Core-Lokt in 150 or 170 grain – mostly 150 grain.

Monarch makes some low cost 30-30 ammunition, but I have not used the Monarch ammo to take a deer yet.  So I can not offer any first hand experience on that brand name.

Types of 30-30 being stockpiled:Remington 150 grain Core-LoktFederal Fusion 150 or 170 grainWinchester 150 or 170 grain

Due to the way the 30-30 drops, the 150 grain bullets are the main ones we stock up on.

30-06 and 270 – the same thing as everything else, for deer sized game we are stockpiling 150 grain, and mostly in Remington Core-Lokt.

There is cheaper ammunition for just about all of the above listed rifles then Remington Core-Lokt, but a lot of it is steel casing, and I can not verify the performance in deer sized game.  Until a round has proven that its effective, I see no reason to stockpile it.

In the 2011 – 2012 hunting season, I will probably try some other type of ammunition out besides Remington.  It would be nice to get some real world experience with how well Federal or Winchester ammunition performs.

223 Remington – Stockpiling 223 for some kind of SHTF situation is a “get it as you find it” affair.  sometimes Wolf will go on sale, sometimes Remington, sometimes Monarch.

Just about all of my 223 is a mix of Monarch and Remington white box ammunition.  Monarch is sold by academy Sports and Outdoors, so its easy to find.  When I go to the academy in Beaumont Texas, I’ll usually grab 3 – 20 round boxes of Monarch 223.  When 3 – 20 round boxes, that is 60 rounds, which is equal to 2 – 30 round magazines.

The problem is, when you start stockpiling 1,000+ rounds of ammo for 1 rifle, you better hope that rifle does not break – or you better have plenty of spare parts.

7.62X39 – As with the 223, the 7.62X39 is the same way.  my personal stockpile of 7.62×39 is a mix of Remington white box, some Wolf, and lots of Monarch.

A couple of things about the 7.62X39 – SKS rifles are still cheaper then Ar-15s and AK-47s, the supply of 7.62X39 seems to go up and down.  Retailers might be out of stock for a few months, get a shipment in, and then be out of stock again for a couple of more months.  So if you see some 7.62X39 on the shelf, grab a few boxes while you can.

Dead Men Risen: The snipers’ story

Filed in winchester rifles uk Leave a comment

There is a man who lives in my area that has the reputation for being one of the best shooters around.  He is extremely proficient in shooting handguns and shotguns, but he is especially well known for his ability to shoot  rifles at long ranges.  I, like many others in my little part of the world, have heard many stories about this man’s ability to shoot a rifle at ranges many people around here find unbelievable.  I was lucky enough to meet him about 7-8 years ago.  I got a shooting education.
This man has forgot more about shooting than I will ever know.  He owned a big farm that ran along the Ohio river.  On a bare strip of ground that paralleled the river, he had a 5′X10′ steel plate set at 1000 yards.  When I first went with him to this range, we sat at a solid built bench that he had set in concrete, and looking down at the far end of the field/range was a small white speck… the 5′X10′ target.  my new friend and shooting mentor set up the bench with rifles rests, spotting scope, custom loaded ammo, and a Winchester model 70 Laredo rifle in .300 Winchester Magnum.  until this point, if I shot anything up to 100 yards and hit it, I thought I was doing great.
On this day, my friend told me I was going to shoot and hit that steel target at the far end of the field that I could only barely see with the naked eye.  As he coached me through the proper way to grip, hold, aim, steady, and fire that big ole’ .300 Win Mag, after about 2-3 seconds, I heard the faint ring of bullet impact on steel.  This first exposure to long range shooting was all it took for my desire to root and grow.  I have since fired many, many more long range shots on that range and with my friend.  it is because of this that I have the greatest respect for the men in the following story.  what I have learned to do for fun and as a hobby, these men, as well as others in various branches of military service, do to protect their fellow soldiers and to keep the bad guys out of our own back yards.

I certainly thank the men who shoot long range to keep us all safe from evil.

Ammunition Consistency Testing Round 1: Wilson Combat vs. Winchester vs. CorBon vs. Wolf vs. Handloads

Filed in winchester guns Leave a comment

You can be the best shooter in the world and have the most accurate rifle known to man, but if your ammunition is inconsistent you’re still going to suck. From High Power Rifle all the way down to 3-gun and USPSA, when centimeters matter you have to know that you can trust your ammo. but which brands are really the best?

Just about every brand of ammunition these days has a “match grade” line boasting improved consistency for the precision shooter. Starting today and continuing until we run out of brands to test, I will be putting every box of match grade ammunition I can find to the test and keeping a running tally of which brand will give you the best consistency.

When we talk about consistency in ammunition we’re really talking about speed. three factors most affect the speed of the round: bullet weight, powder charge, and barrel length.

The only truly objective method of testing ammunition consistency is using a chronograph and measuring the speed of the bullets as they exit the barrel. Even if we were to strap a rifle to a slab of concrete so it doesn’t move, fire the test rounds and examine the resulting target, any variation in the group size might be due to barrel imperfections instead of issues with the ammunition. therefore we will use bullet speed as the yardstick against which we will measure these rounds.

Testing Procedure

Using a National Match Service Rifle style AR with a 20 inch barrel and 1:8 twist rifling, I fired 10 rounds of each brand of ammunition from the prone position over a chronograph situated exactly 12 feet from the end of the muzzle. I recorded the velocity of each round as reported by the chronograph.

To create useful data charts, all velocities were “normalized.” I found the average velocity of the 10-round string of shots, and then subtracted from each of the recorded velocities. This yielded a set of numbers, some positive and some negative, with the mean being zero. I then analyzed the normalized plots.

To compare the ammunition, the interquartile range or “IQR” will be determined. IQR is established by figuring-out which two velocities 50% of the rounds fall between, and then determining the distance between those velocities. The IQR will be the value by which the ammunition brands are ranked.

Ammunition Brands to Test

Wilson Combat donated two boxes of their match grade ammunition as well as two boxes of other brands for the test, and I threw in a box of Wolf and a box of my own handloads.

The non-normalized results were somewhat confusing.

However, the normalized results were much easier to understand.

This is what’s called a boxplot. I suggest you read the Wikipedia article on it, but the basic concept is that the area of the box represents the location of 50% of the observations, and the dotted lines extend out to solid lines represent the location of the largest and smallest observations. The thick black line is the median, separating the lowest five observations from the highest five observations. The ideal boxplot will have the black line centered in the box and whiskers extended equally to both sides.

In terms of the data points being “normally distributed” the handloads and the CorBon 69gr rounds are the closest, but most of the ammo appears to be forming a nice, normal distribution around the mean. The only ammo that worries me is the Winchester 64gr ammo, which has a distribution skewed more towards the lower end of the spectrum. further testing should be conducted to see if this type of skew is typical in Winchester ammunition and to ensure that the results provided by this sample of 10 rounds properly represents the ammunition produced by Winchester.

The IQR really says it all (smaller is better). in terms of consistency, currently Wilson Combat takes the prize. but with more ammunition on the way, can Wilson Combat stay on top? just how good is that Hornaday match grade stuff? will Foghorn stop asking leading questions?

Tune in next time to find out.

Modern 45-70 Performance

Filed in game winchester Leave a comment

The high performance 45-70 is possibly the most reliable 200-yard heavy game caliber available. Although it must be considered an ancient caliber, the reasons for its capabilities are generally not well understood. this is primarily the result of a general misunderstanding of how best to load the caliber for maximum effectiveness against heavy and dangerous game. the rules that apply to the building of ammo for other calibers are commonly applied to the 45-70 and, consequently, tend to limit the caliber’s effectiveness.

It is extremely common for shooters to prefer relatively small calibers that produce high velocity and flat, long-range trajectory. this is evidenced by the overwhelming popularity of calibers such as the 30-06 Springfield, 7mm Magnum, and 300 Winchester Magnum. These calibers work with fairly small diameter bullets that require expansion in order to produce reasonably quick kills. Simply stated, the price paid for flat trajectory with modest recoil is bullet diameter insufficient to produce quick kills with non-expanding bullets.

Owing to this ability, the 45-70 provides a degree of lethality not generally found with other calibers, even ones producing much greater power. this is best evidenced by comparisons with the mighty 458 Winchester Magnum. As conventionally loaded with 500-grain expanding bullets, the 458 is notorious for its relatively shallow penetration. Consequently, when really heavy game is hunted, it is quite common for roundnose solids to be used. Unfortunately, roundnose solids tend to be slow to incapacitate big game. By comparison, the 45-70 can be loaded with blunt non-expanding hard-cast bullets that produce much deeper penetration than the 458 with expanding bullets, and cut a much larger wound channel than the 458 with roundnose solids. Also, the speed of incapacitation is much faster with a blunt non-expanding bullet than with any roundnose solid. Simply stated, proper hard-cast bullets effectively split the difference between under-penetrative expanding bullets and the slow to incapacitate roundnose solids.

The only significant limitation of the 45-70 is the 200-yard trajectory. However, within that range, the 45-70 can anchor the heaviest game on the planet with brutal authority. It can shoot lengthwise through the heaviest game animal including buffalo with large caliber blunt bullets, giving the shooter the advantage of not having to pass on bad-angle shots. if the bull of a lifetime is headed straight away from the shooter and the seat of the pants shot is all that is offered, the shooter can take the shot and know that he will reach the vitals. Generally, when proper hard-cast bullets are used, lengthwise shots result in exit wounds. if confronted by a heavy coastal grizzly hell-bent on annihilation, the 45-70 lever-gun will reliably shoot lengthwise through the bear, while providing the quickest action type available, the lever-action, should a rapid follow-up shot be required. this exceptional combination of action speed and impact effect is impossible to beat when the skirmish is close, and the game is dangerous. And as it turns out, the caliber is also capable of outstanding accuracy, on the order of MOA. if I could own only one big game rifle, it would certainly be a 45-70 lever-gun.

Winchester .410/.45 Colt Combo Pack

Filed in winchester guns Leave a comment

Winchester Ammunition is now selling 410 and 45 Colt ammo in a combo package for owners of the Taurus Judge (and similar firearms.)  The ammunition in the combination pack is from the Winchester PDX1 line of self defense ammo.

Each combo pack includes 10 rounds of 225 grain .45 Colt PDX1 and 10 rounds of 2 1/2″ 410 gauge PDX1.

From a marketing and sales standpoint, this really makes sense.  One of the marketing messages associated with the 410/45 Colt firearms is the ability to mix and match ammo for a variety of threats.  With one box, Winchester can give the average consumer all the ammo that they may feel they would need.

Winchester Blind Side Waterfowl Ammo

Filed in winchester guns Leave a comment

Winchester Ammunition announced a new waterfowl line of ammo: the Blind side ammunition with HEX Shot.

The new loads use polyhedron shot instead of round shot for greater wounding effect for faster kills.  Winchester Ammunition claims the HEX Shot results in 250% more trauma, prevents overpenetration, and increases knock down shock.  Also, due to the ability to stack the shot tighter than with round shot, Winchester states 15% more pellets are in each shell.

The Blind side ammo also uses a Diamond cut Wad that provides more consistent patterns, and increases the kill area by up to 25%.

The new ammo will be available in the Fall of 2011.  No MSRP was announced.
