From about 9am this morning (Friday 25th March 20110), residents of Park Farm heard a series of very loud explosions, so much so, that several residents from houses facing the River and Green Wheel, were out on their doorsteps.
The shots seemed to have been fired from a shotgun being discharged just the other side of the river on the stretch known as Middle Level and the land known as Drysides at Horsey Toll/farm. Normally when shoots are organised on this stretch of land, they are well away from residential areas to the railway side of the land.
Update: All credit to Police who after negotiating difficult access to site quickly attended, but the shooter had already decamped. However if (s)he returns, or you have any information, the incident reference number is 106/25. Alternatively you may wish to leave information anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, who will never ask for your name or trace your call. Update 2: Residents report further police activity (Friday pm) in and around Stanground Wood, officers and police dogs employed.

Pick 10 Books off The List of 100 Books to Read before you Die




Last week while I was at my weekly trip to Starbucks, I pulled out my Kindle and decided it was time to get started on my list of books to read. I had a few downloaded to my Kindle and decided to randomly pick one. The strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde won.
I found the book to be a quick read, helped by the fact that it was much shorter than I anticipated. of course I know the basic story, although some of the details were gleaned from the musical Jekyll & Hyde that came out while I was in college. no, sadly, no musical numbers in Stevenson’s book. but I continued on. The story really kicked in for me towards the end when a letter from Dr. Jekyll detailing his transformation, how it started, etc. was included. I thought it was really interesting to think about how we are all Dr. Jekyll in a way in our every day lives. Maybe not quite as “good” as the character in the book, but we trudge on every day, doing the best we can, squelching our more basic id-like urges. we don’t let our inner Mr. Hyde’s out to play, despite those instances when we really really want to. At first Hyde is just a way for Jekyll to be someone he’s not, someone who can do all the things Jekyll suppresses. but we’re told that the more and more we let Hyde out the more he will take over until we can’t find ourselves anymore and we will eventually be lost.
While I don’t give the book raving reviews, it was an enjoyable read. I won’t be deleting it any time soon we’ll just say. if you’re looking for a quick break from what you usually read this might be a good book to pick up.

Winchester White Box Ammo Sucks: A Review

Winchester “White Box” ammo (aka: WWB) sucks.  maybe it is just me, but I don’t think so.  Reading some of the threads on some of the gun forums makes me think I’m not alone on this.

WWB is an inexpensive line of ammunition that tends to be popular because it is frequently cheaper than other factory ammo at WalMart and other stores.  I’ve purchased a few of the WWB 100-round bulk packs of 9mm in the past, but no more.

The WWB 9mm load is a 115 grain FMJ bullet loaded to standard pressures.  I’ve measured it from 1050-1125 fps (approximately) across a Chrony Beta chronograph.  so it seems pretty normal.

The problem is it induces malfunctions in everything!

I’ve used different lots of the WWB 9mm, and the only pistol I can get it to run reliably in is a Glock 19.  That’s it. The list of pistols that won’t reliably function with the WWB 9mm is pretty long, but includes the Sig Sauer P226, Springfield XD and Smith & Wesson M&P.  (After yesterday’s trip to the range, add the Taurus 709.  The 709 loved hollowpoints though…more on all of that later.)

And by malfunction, I don’t mean the failure to go “bang” every hundred rounds or so.  Nope.  I mean every magazine has at least one malfunction (usually two or three per mag).  Failures to extract, double feeds, stovepipes, solar flares and other weird happenings are a regular occurrence with WWB.

I can load any other ammo into the same guns, and will get 100% reliability with them.  Yet, try to feed the WWB, and better call EMS, because those pistols immediately start choking!

No more Winchester white box ammo for me.  I gave away the last of the WWB I had: goodbye and good riddance!

(Note:  In general, I really like Winchester ammo.  I keep Winchester Ranger 00-buck in the 870, and think the 127 grain +P+ 9mm Ranger round is fantastic.  I just have learned to hate the WWB.)

ONE of the winners of a BBC 2 restaurant competition has been working in Winchester for five months, the Hampshire Chronicle can reveal.

Danielle Meenagh has been working at the Hotel du Vin and Bistro Winchester after winning a scholarship on BBC 2’s Michel Roux’s Service.

the chef trained eight young people in the art of front-of-house service, with three outstanding performers winning the chance to work at leading restaurants and hotels across the country.

miss Meenagh said: “I noticed the ad for the show when I was looking for jobs on the internet. At first I did not know of Michel Roux or what he did. Things have changed so much and I see so many opportunities for the future.

“I really enjoy the industry and working with Hotel du Vin & Bistro Winchester, every day is different and I really feel I make a difference to our guests dining experience.

“It was and still is overwhelming to look back at the opportunity which I have been given; I was going nowhere, now since the show I am now moving onto bigger and better things.”

Hotel du Vin general manager, mark Jones, said: “Danielle was like a breath of fresh air coming into the industry with no pre conceptions. She has been incredibly polite, has a very courteous manner, is very enthusiastic and has lots of energy to work hard and the passion to learn.

“Danielle has come on leaps and bounds and I am sure she will have a long and successful future with Hotel du Vin.”
