Portsmouth Christmas Parties Expected To Outperform Their Southampton Counterparts in 2011, Say Eventa

Eventa, organisers of Christmas parties for groups and companies in the UK, have predicted that events held in Portsmouth in 2011 will outperform those held in Southampton in terms of the speed of uptake PDF  View as PDF  Print View

June 29, 2011 (FPRC) — Eventa, the UK’s fastest growing organiser of Christmas parties for groups and companies in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, have announced that they expect this year’s Portsmouth Christmas parties to outperform their Southampton counterparts in terms of the speed with which the Christmas party places are booked up. That’s according to a study of the amount of sales and enquiries for the two locations and the results have surprised Eventa CEO Rob Hill. “It’s very surprising, yes”, he claims. “Southampton is traditionally one of our most popular Christmas party locations and to have Portsmouth, a much smaller city with fewer party venues, outperforming it to such an extent is very surprising indeed.” Hill does however have an explanation for the trend: “Christmas parties in Portsmouth are a little bit cheaper than in Southampton this year and we’ve got some really interesting themes, such as the Las Vegas night, so the proximity of the two means that groups nearer to Southampton are heading to Pompey.” Southampton is home to a large number of national companies such as Ford and B&Q, as well as the West Quay shopping centre housing stores such as Apple and Ikea. all groups that would be looking to attend a Christmas party, in other words. Hill says that a lot of these groups are spending the day in Portsmouth, exploring areas such as Gun Wharf Quay and the nearby port and then booking into hotels for the night after their Christmas parties. “They spend the night so that they don’t have to rush back to Southampton. It is only around 30 minutes on the train and this can be done first thing in the morning without any hassle.” among the other events attracting guests to Portsmouth this year are a number of mid-week party nights, offering places for better value on off-peak nights.

So here it is, Merry Christmas… wait, that’s not right. this is actually my final piece of radio for the year and is in fact just the previous three that have posted right here on this blog all edited together nicely. well it’s been fun doing the radio module, going out and trying to get stories… failing. trying to edit and record your copy… generally succeeding. but now we’re done, and I leave you with the script and the final bulletin itself in YouTube form.

Hampshire County Council has agreed to change the way social care is paid for in the area because the current system is thought to be unfair.

In a meeting this past week it was agreed that those who need social care will all have their own individualised budget tailored to their needs. the new plan would ensure that people contribute to their own care based on their ability to pay, not the services they choose.

The new policy will mean an average increase of between twenty eight and thirty six pounds per week for those affected. with heavy cuts to the council’s budget this plan would mean less contribution from the council to certain users of social care whilst others who are less able to pay would receive a larger grant.

Top UK Theme Parks

The top UK theme parks in terms of number of visitors annually include Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Alton Towers and Drayton Manor. Here’s a brief look at what each park has to offer.

For Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Drayton Manor and Alton Towers opening times on specific days of the week, as well as for information about scheduled attractions, you can call the park. but, generally speaking, the parks are open for your enjoyment by 10am.

Blackpool Pleasure Beach

With an estimated 6 million visitors annually, Blackpool Pleasure Beach may be the UK’s most visited theme park. Located on the outskirts of the park’s 42 acres is the Big Blue Hotel, one of the highest awarded hotels in North West England.

Visitors can enjoy roller coasters, thrill rides, water rides, shows and games. Dozens of restaurants dot the landscape along with a “traditional” family pub. The pub hosts performances by some of the UK’s newest pop bands.

The operating season typically runs from February through November, although the hotel and the ice skating rink are open year round. a small section of the park is open to the public during the weeks leading up to Christmas, as well.

Like Drayton Manor and other theme parks, Alton Towers opening times vary throughout the year. but, unlike other parks, much of it is open year round. Attracting over 3 million visitors in 2008, it is the 11th most visited theme park in Europe and the second most visited in the UK, according to the Themed Entertainment Association’s “Attraction Attendance Report”.

With two hotels and a Conference Centre, the resort truly offers something for everyone. The roller coaster enthusiast will find Europe’s first inverted coaster, the world’s first vertical drop coaster and the world’s first B&M flying roller coaster.

For everyone else, there are 500 acres of rides, attractions and historic areas, including the ruins of a stately manor for which the park is named.

With over a million visitors per year and 280 acres, Drayton Manor is one of the UK’s top theme parks and has been a popular “inland pleasure resort” since 1949, when it was first opened. The rides and themed areas are open from March to November. The 15 acre zoo, home to 100 species from around the world, is open year round.

Located near Tamworth in Staffordshire, England, it is now the home to Thomas Land, with rides and attractions featuring characters from the popular kid’s TV series Thomas and friends.

With Drayton Manor, Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Alton Towers and many other parks to choose from, there is no shortage of thrill rides in the UK.

I am publishing Warren Winshesters letter dated Thursday Feb 24 that he sent to Tammy Vock, City Clerk and Ed Bierschenk for her to pass on to all members of the council.  Too bad we are not getting any of this information in the Press Journal. BG

Subject: re: Letter of Council member Turner re Boards and commissions

Please distribute to all council members, along Ms. Turner’s letter, if it was not previously copied to them.

In response to Ms. Turner’s letter of 2/18/2011, and the Clerk’s letter of the same date, I seriously doubt that a majority of the Council approved the tone of the Clerk’s letter, and it is not the sort of letter Ms. Vock would send without direction.  It says without saying, that effective April 5, council intends to fire  all members of the Utility Board, planning and Zoning Board and Finance Commission. I’ll sure miss the pay!

I recognize that workshops have been held. The first was immediately before Christmas and the 2/1/2011 was after a long and extensive Council Meeting, that was not of a time certain. Too much of this appears to be taking place behind closed doors, with ZERO public input, and in a manner which permits Council to control all appointments, and with the full possibility of directing the output of the theoretically independent boards.

Single council members should not be making changes to any ordinance unless publicly distributed to the press and approved by a majority of the Council. There is no indication that any of Ms. Turner’s memos on Chapter 2 changes went to other council members before the 2/1/11 meeting, or they ever discussed her latest revisions of Chapter 2. unless 3 members approved these changes which occurred after the latest workshop, simply placing them in the back up material for an 11 page ordinance, which impacts every volunteer in the City, is wrong. In addition, she is bypassing the responsible charter officer and directing subordinates, which is presumptuous to say the least.

 I repeat that:

-having individual council members appoint members to boards is purely political and dangerous. If you owe your seat to the sponsorship of a single person, then decision making is compromised.

- because terms of council members are two years, with 3/2 rotation, the boards theoretically, would have to be reconstituted every year, just as council is. that means little permanency, and no “corporate memory. I question whether an appointee could legally serve after a council member’s term ended, even if that member won re-election, without being re-appointed.

-politicizing the boards has no public benefit. it only gives power to individual council members, over and above what the charter permits. Our planning and Zoning and Utility Boards are the best examples of why all boards need to serve at the will of a majority of council, and for extended periods.

-most grievous is the Clerk’s memo/letter of 18 February, which in effect tells all commission and board members, their terms are going to end sometime “soon”, at an unspecified date. This presumes that you are going to change the ordinance, which doesn’t even get a final public hearing until 4/5.

-directly appointing members of the P&Z would permit 3 council members to control, and with subterfuge, direct P&Z decisions. I would point out that Vero Beach today, is the result of dedicated volunteers who could not be compromised and were beholden to no elected official. They have served at the will of a majority of several councils, and with longevity. The same is true of other boards.Your plans would change all that. That does not mean that normal end of term changes should not be made, just that every one serving should have the support of a majority of the council.

-finally, a “thank you” from Ms. Vock, though appreciated, rather than from the mayor, is in poor taste and inappropriate. While I appreciate Ms. Vock and have known her for over 25 years, she is not a person who would behave so carelessly. she is a lady of integrity, class and style and should never have been used in this manner. Asking her to send out such a memo is simply crass.

-likewise, accusing staff of undermining council when it is obvious most of you are not familiar with the charter or the legislative process, is totally unprofessional behavior.

-these actions are not about good public service or transparency, they are about power and control.

Volunteers currently work only for the council as a majority body. such a memo should at a minimum, have the signature of the mayor, and then only after at least 3 members have approved the action. Passing around changes out of the public view, and changing a draft after a workshop, does not meet the issues of transparency which were promised. such non-transparent actions and secrecy could just as easily be used to circumvent the Sunshine statute, and may already have.

I thank you all for listening, and my hope is that you will at least make a majority decision before firing all your volunteers. You will likely not have a Utility or P&Z after the implementation of this action. Once again, as in the case of totally botched termination of mr. Vitunac, council takes action without thinking, without adequate legal advice, and without the simple graces of leadership by example. In the same meeting you decided to terminate mr. Vitunac, you praised the advantages of written performance evaluations. You had a perfect opportunity to place him on written probation, bring him back in 6 months, and then take action in a manner that did not embarrass you or add costs to the taxpayer. You flunked leadership #101!

It goes without saying, the City does not have the financial ability to hire expertise members of the Utility Board bring to us at no cost. Nor can you replicate the history and corporate memory of the P&Z. Everyone thinks they are financial experts so that should not be a problem. What you should do with all new members is to insist that they sit through the Budget workshops in July. You should remember also, that despite some people’s ideas that government should be “run like a business”, government exists as a collective body to provide services which Business can’t. Some parts of public business should be treated as “business”, like selling the Power system which has been totally mishandled. it is a travesty that you spend all your time in firing people, yet you’ve not had the first workshop to sort out your options or to define what you want to sell. This is the most important issue you will face and so far, you’ve given FPL all the advantage.

Thank you for reading. I’d pleased to talk to anyone who disagrees with my perspective.

David and Theresa Yeates ask for public help to solve the murder of their daughter Joanna

THEIR faces are etched with more than three weeks of grief and their eyes tell the story of every parent’s worst nightmare.

Pale and worn, they are a family whose lives have been torn apart and are desperate for answers as to who killed their daughter and dumped her body on a snow-covered roadside, to be found on Christmas morning.

but today brave Theresa and David Yeates found the strength to make one more plea for help in finding whoever strangled 25-year-old Jo.

the couple travelled to Bristol, where Jo had been living and working for the past two years, from their rural home in Ampfield, near Romsey, to make the emotional appeal.

Supported by their son Chris and Jo’s boyfriend, Greg Reardon, 27, they were quick to point out how they feel very much part of the mammoth hunt to find the murderer and get justice for their daughter.

and they urged people who may have suspicions about what happened to the landscape architect not to prolong their torment – and come forward and speak to detectives.

former Hampshire schoolgirl Jo – who attended Sherborne House in Chandler’s Ford, Embley Park, in Romsey, and Peter Symonds College in Winchester – vanished on December 17.

but it was eight days later when walkers made the grim discovery of Jo’s body at the edge of a road, minus one ski sock and her coat and boots.

the couple said: “We spend much of our time – as I imagine most of the country does – thinking of scenarios which took Jo, alive in her flat, to being found dead by the side of a country lane. these scenarios change as events unfold, and new facts are made available.

all our thoughts are passed back to the police. although we invariably do not have all the facts known by the police, we do know Jo. we know what Jo would do, and how she would react in different situations. this, we believe, is our major contribution.”

the couple said they were aware that almost the entire country had been moved by the tragedy of Jo’s murder and the discovery of her body just a few miles from the flat where she lived with Greg in the Clifton area of Bristol.

they added: “For over three weeks there has been extensive media coverage of Jo’s disappearance and murder.

the last few weeks have encompassed an extensive festive period.

many people will have probably been socialising and spending extra time with family and friends.

“Many of us are ‘armchair detectives’, but if this activity triggers anything please come forward. If you do know something and you do not come forward, you are hampering the apprehension of Jo’s killer(s) and the perpetrator(s) is still free.

“You will also be prolonging the torment of Jo’s family and friends.”

Appealing for help, David, a 63-yearold IT consultant, and Theresa, 58, who works in Waitrose, asked:

■ do you know anyone that hasn’t been shocked or disturbed?

■ Has anyone you know had an unusual or inexplicable reaction?

■ was their behaviour unusual on the weekend of 17/18/19th December, or throughout the past three weeks?

■ do you know someone who has been behaving out of character either by actions, or what is said – or not said?

■ do you know someone who has inexplicably become reclusive, quiet or vocal?

■ Has someone tried to impress on you a scenario which has been inconsistent with the information released by the police at that time – and refused to change it?

they added: “It would appear that the nation is shocked and appalled by what has happened to our daughter. do you know someone who has been, somehow, justifying her being killed?

Eastern Market – DC « Sarah Winchester

Filed in winchester market Leave a comment

My husband and I spent a lovely weekend in Washington DC visiting my brother and sister-in-law.  they live on Capitol Hill right near Eastern Market and yesterday we spent the afternoon walking around.  It was chilly, but the sun was out, and we were bundled up.  plus everyone was in that Christmas spirit.

Vintage finds.  My husband got a great pair of cowboy boots for $45!

My sister-in-law in some super cute heart-shaped sunglasses.  I kind of regret not getting them.

This booth cracked me up.  It looked like a bunch of old Christmas decorations just thrown on the table direct from Grandma’s attic.

1963 called.  It wants its ugly wreaths back.

_

My brother and sister-in law threw a great party Saturday night to celebrate Christmas and get to see old friends.  We were thrilled to be a part of it.  Now I am in Atlanta to finish up a project and then back to Boston for Christmas.  I can’t believe it is 5 days away!  This elf needs to get busy.

I remember well the times when I was a child and I would take part in the nativity play. I will always remember watching myself as one of the wise men trying to remember the speaking lines and singing a number of Christmas carols in the church across the road. even now I can not begin to think how stressful it would be for the teacher. miss Kerry Hardman looks surprisingly relaxed for a teacher who normally looks like she just needs a rest. “Christmas may be a really busy time of the year, but it’s also really exciting. I think some of the excitement from the children at Christmas has rubbed off onto me”.

This picture shows Kerry relaxed after a hard days work.

Kerry is smiling as she finally makes her self comfortable and sits down. I knew that with it being near to Christmas she would have lots of work to do so I felt that it was best to organise the quietest time for her. as I prepare the questions, I can sense that she is feeling nervous about what questions I may be about to ask her.

I start the interview by asking her how her day has gone. “ It’s brilliant being in school before Christmas”. she also adds “you start to really get into the Christmas spirit around October where you have Christmas rehearsals, party days, and other Christmas activities” although she does say that while doing this it is very hard to “try and keep on timetable as much as possible”. I now want to ask the most important question. what made her go into the teaching profession. It could be many different reasons but she tells me “I always wanted to be a teacher since I was 12”. she also explained that it is the chance to help the children to learn the relevant skills needed to push them forward when they move onto further education. This seems like a fair point. so what are these key skills you may be asking? Maybe you have already guessed. They are of course “reading, writing, numeracy, socialising and gaining their independence”. so surely every child deserves a chance to be pushed to their full potential. Lets be honest It is only at this age that you can help change the childs future. If they are not given the support or guidance then they will turn their backs on the education system.

“I think some of the excitement from the children at Christmas has rubbed off onto me”

Kerry then went on to say that she was prepared when it came to choosing a University that suited he ambition. St Alfred College (Also known as Winchester University), where she studied hard for four years and was finally awarded with a BA (Bachelor of Art) honours in education with a QTS (Qualified teacher status) in English which was her specialised subject. Whilst at Winchester she says “I had to do teaching placements every year”. This is surely a good thing as it helps the student gain as much experience of what it is like to be a teacher. This does make me think that this would be great idea for other subjects to have work placements involved as well.

I then go onto asking whether she went straight into teaching. she tells me “I joined Supply and demand in order to get to know the schools in the area better”. she adds that “working in different schools was really tough”. although this is a great opportunity to see what works and what doesn’t so that you can learn how to improve as a teacher.

“We strive for inclusive learning environment for all”.

I feel it may be best to move onto current work and so I ask Kerry about her first proper teaching post. she tells me that she was put forward by ‘Supply and Demand’ who felt that she was a ‘suitable’ candidate for the vacancy. That was just a placement filling in for teacher off with sickness. she then was hired as a teacher in school in Poole. This was her first ever permanent teaching post. she has been teaching Year 2 class for the last four years. she tells me that she ‘loves’ this year group because you can see ‘real growth with the children Academically and Independently.’. I then decide to ask her whether she would like to change year groups. Kerry replies “Year three would be interesting and so would Year one but nothing lower”. It must be the idea of working with children to young to talk and hold conversation that must put her off.

This is a picture of Kerry working at school.

I decide to move away from asking about her opinion and look to what does a day in the life of a teacher involve. If like me, you can’t really remember much of what you learnt when you were in Year 2 then this may jog your memories. The day starts at 8am. This then moves onto the job of the teacher which includes using resources, writing assessments and being organised throughout the day. The morning involve learning core subjects like English and Maths and visits to the library. while in the afternoon the focus is on other topics like R.E and PE. Then after school is time for the teacher to have ‘non contact time’ to get on with the work load.

Kerry also believes that the children enjoy learning and states that they follow the code “We strive for inclusive learning environment for all”. This may be something to keep with her when she decides to push on in the next ten years where she says she would love to be year leader or mentoring skit students (teaching course).

I decide to wrap it all up by asking one last question. what advice would you give to young people wishing to become teachers. she tells me that they should “ be prepared” and that “the children only have one opportunity to learn so only do it if your hearts in it”. I wish her good luck with the rest of the Christmas activities and hopefully the children will enjoy their time before Christmas at school as well.

Raider Pierre hit by pneumonia

Import to miss Chelmsford clash

Romford Raiders have been rocked by the news Pierre Wilhelmsson has been suffering with pneumonia during the festive break.

Defenceman Wilhelmsson is back in the UK after spending Christmas in his native Sweden, but will miss the Essex derby against Chelmsford on Sunday (5.15pm).

Player-coach Danny Marshall backs his team, nonetheless, to get something out of their 2011 opener at Rom Valley Way.

He said: “Pierre has been ill for a few weeks and probably would not have played in the games against Cardiff and Invicta [which were postponed after heavy snowfall made travelling difficult.

“He is back here now, but has had pneumonia and taking a hit like that, will have to build up his fitness again.

“We’ll only have one import [Juraj Huska] this weekend, but we’ve got the guys to do a job. David Oliver has stepped up for me before this season and is more than capable of doing it again.

“Chelmsford is a must-win game for us and it’s time we turned them over. Losing 1-0 at their place hurt and the 3-3 draw at our place, when they scored in the last few seconds, also hurt.

“Luck hasn’t been on our side so far, but we can definitely do it.”

Unbeaten in their last five outings, Raiders currently trail their neighbours by three points in ENL Division One, having played a game more.

And Marshall wants them to keep their momentum to increase the pressure on leaders Isle of Wight and Invicta.

“We’re not in a bad position, but we know we’ve got to work twice as hard now,” he said.

“I want us to go up the table and the top three have got to hold their positions with us at their heels.”
