SUPERNATURAL: Mommy Dearest

Well, wow. Perhaps I should have, especially given Rachel the lady-angel’s warnings last week, but I did not see the ending of this episode coming. at all. it was a great reveal, and I still don’t know what to make of it, but I’m excited to learn more. Before we get to the end though, let’s first discuss what led up to it, shall we?

Something about watching Team Hunter use an iPad just seems completely out of place, doesn’t it? I feel like these guys live in a world of corded telephones and dial up connections – not one where there may soon be a demon tracking app, you know (Demon Findr)? Maybe it’s Dean’s car and cassette player, but even when they’re using cell phones and surfing the net, there’s still an air of vintage about them that makes an iPad seem very out of place, especially in Bobby’s hands.

Technology quibbles aside, ‘Mommy Dearest’ turned out very different from what I expected. I went into the hour expecting that Eve was going to really step up her game and announce her big evil plan for the destruction of the world; thereby setting up the main thrust of the last few episodes of the season. Instead, she stepped up her game, toyed with the brothers’ emotions for a while, and then promptly bit the dust. Problem solved. Of course, Sam and Dean’s lives are never problem-free, and there is definitely trouble still brewing, but we’ll come back to that.

Eve was in Colorado working on a hybrid monster that Dean later dubbed “Jefferson Starships”. I love the idea of kids watching SUPERNATURAL behind their parents’ backs and later crying to their confused mom or dad that they can’t sleep because there’s a Jefferson Starship in their closet. But really, am I the only one who has fond childhood memories of “We Built This City” or “Nothing’s Gonna stop us Now”? Yeah, just me? Okay, I’ll shut up now.

Anyone who saw the promos for the episode knew that Eve would turn herself into the spitting image of Mama Winchester just to mess with the brothers’ heads while she spilled her evil plan of evil. Mary sightings are generally pretty heartbreaking on this show, but this one lacked some of the punch of the others – probably because nobody was fooled for a second about who she really was. These semi-frequent Mary cameos are also just really starting to highlight the fact that we haven’t seen John Winchester in a very, very long time and I still think that it NEEDS to happen. Hey Jeffery Dean Morgan, could you quit it with the soaring movie career for five minutes and go see your boys?

The Starship saga lent itself to a really nice brotherly moment when the Winchesters rescued a set of young brothers and drove them to their uncle’s house. That shot in the Impala with the older boys so clearly reminded of their own childhood dynamic – all alone in the world, the big brother steps in as caretaker for his little brother – was really sweet. it almost felt like we were looking at the eventual successors to the “Most Special Hunters in the World” title. Alas, it was not to be, because this is SUPERNATURAL, where cute children almost always end up eating someone’s face off.

Cas ended up tracking Eve down without assistance from Steve Jobs (incidentally, I REALLY wanted to see what went down in that room between Cas and the Starship Sheriff. After seeing the end of the episode, I want to see it even more.). After Eve pulled her little special effects trick, Dean baited her into biting him so she’d ingest the phoenix ash he had swirling around in his bloodstream. Pretty great, even though there would have been way too many variables for me to be comfortable with that plan if I were him.

So now Eve is dead, and the Mother won’t be the big bad that has to be destroyed at the end of the season. She did leave a parting gift though – intel that Crowley is still alive (oh no! But also, yay!) and that his endgame is not prime purgatorial real estate after all, but rather souls. Souls are apparently the greatest source of alternative energy ever, and Eve and Crowley were battling to collect the most. But how could Crowley be alive since Cas burned his bones, you ask. And that, my friends, is THE question for next week, where it looks like we’ll finally find out what the ‘baby in a trench coat’ has been up to all season. something tells me it’s not going to be good news.

Part of me is really excited for this development; I love Crowley, I love Cas, and I love the idea of Cas going off the rails, because it will make for interesting tv. But on the other hand, I feel like we’ve been opening a Russian nesting doll of ‘big bads’ since the first episode of the season. Souless Sam revealed the Campbells, who revealed Crowley, who revealed the Alphas, who revealed Eve, who revealed…Cas, and also Crowley again? All this with a side of angel war. with everything that’s happened, it’s hard not to feel like this season has lacked focus despite the amount of fun I’ve had watching it. I feel that, in hindsight, we’re going to see that all of these things were actually just distractions to keep the boys (and us), from looking too closely into Cas’ affairs. at least I hope so – right now the season feels more slapdash than structured, but I’m choosing to trust that things will come together in the end. if not, at least we get another season to make things right!

I sat in silence for awhile until I finally blurted out, “Who’s playing the Dad, he’s magnificent!” My husband was quite troubled with that. from that point on Supernatural was our favorite show. We even spent a Valentine’s Day relaxing, eating snacks, and watching the show.

Inching towards their 100th episode, Supernatural dives into another episode dealing with the past, dealing with John and Mary.

Anna(Julie McNiven), a fallen angel, imprisoned and tortured in heaven believes that the only way to stop the apocalypse is by killing John and Mary Winchester before they can conceive Sam, Lucifer’s true vessel. Jared’s performance as Sam seeing his parents as young adults is heartbreaking. His face lights up in a mixture of wonder, happiness, and pain. We can actually see the actor’s green eyes glitter with tears. Jared is so amazing with moments that require this kind of tenderness, I was drawn into that moment right along with Sam. later, Sam and John have the scene that I believe many of us fans have wanted since the death of John. the writers give it to us like it’s a gift and Jared and Matt are amazing in it. the scene is a must see and even though it felt like the writers were writing for us fans, we needed this moment.

Amy Gumenick and Matt Cohen are irresistible and delightful as Mary and John. Amy is beautiful and strong as Mother Mary Winchester. she is a good hunter, great fighter and yet, upon finding out that her sons are hunters, her strength dissolves and what is left, leaves us breathless. was it wrong for her to keep her hunter lifestyle a secret from John? perhaps. but Mary was human. she was just a young woman who wanted a husband and children and a normal life. the tragedy is that “normal” was only an illusion.

Matt Cohen delivers a convincing performance under tremendous pressure. first stepping back into the shoes once filled by Jeffrey Dean Morgan and then playing the Archangel Michael.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan is John Winchester. I could go on for a very long time about Jeffrey Dean Morgan: his mossy green eyes, his deep dimples, and let’s not forget his heavy, syrup laden voice…. Jeffrey planted an indelible mark as John. We know John to be tough, brutal, arrogant, and condescending. Yet it’s all driven by pain, and fear of losing more of his family. John was a possessive and over protective tyrant over his boys, but Jeffrey Dean Morgan reminded us that it was all done out of fear and love. John was a man drowning in memories of fire, death, and misery. but it was Jeff who reminded us of all that pain, even when John was being secretive and even when John was yelling at his boys.

Matt gives us a John that is untainted by demons and death. We are able to see John in his purest form, which Matt delivers in copious amounts.

Jensen’s performance was both compelling and disturbing. As previously seen in “Sam Interrupted”, Dean’s hold on reality is fragile. At thirty, Dean has spent more years in hell than he has on earth. Dean travels back in time with intent: find Anna, stop her, and save his parents. It’s done at the expense of his emotions which begin to shred in layers the more he realizes that he and his brother are losing their battle. Jensen’s strength is in his ability to envision an episode in it’s entirety. Usually scenes aren’t filmed in order and we still see Dean unravel before us, we see the hunter deteriorate and we see the boy who would do anything so his parents and Sam could have that “normal” life. Dean’s scene with Mary(you all know which one I’m talking about) is heart wrenching. What is astounding is that Jensen Ackles is barely moving, and we are left to wonder where all of Dean’s emotions are emanating from, it’s truly astounding.

What the episode finally delivers is the meeting of Michael and his one true vessel. Matt Cohen is wonderful as the condescending Archangel Michael. Matt and Jensen’s chemistry was intense and immensely satisfying to watch. Watching the last scene over and over again, I’m troubled with Dean’s reaction. does Dean believe Michael? only Jensen and the writers know what was going on in Dean’s head.

After years of watching Supernatural, I’m ecstatic about their fifth season. Riding shotgun in a 1967 Chevy Impala has never looked this good and PUDDING will never be the same.

Supernatural star Jared Padalecki has teased out a few story details about about the Heaven story arc, which has been popping up a bit in the current series of Supernatural.

In a recent interview for Inner Space, he said that fans will learn more about the civil war being fought in heaven between the forces of Castiel (Misha Collins) and his nemesis Raphael.

“We do find out that Cas is kind of calling on some things maybe he even shouldn’t be calling on to help his cause,” explained the actor. “Ultimately his intentions are good, but as we’ve played with for six seasons on Supernatural, the road to Hell is paved with good intentions.”

Padalecki added that he and his on screen brother Dean Winchester will ultimately get caught in the middle of the Castiel battle.

“We see Cas as an angel struggling with [questions like], ‘Do use this? Is this proper? Am I being altruistic or am I being power-hungry?’. and so we see this wonderful internal struggle.

“The [Winchester] boys are sort of caught up in the middle, because we have our own goals with getting rid of the Mother of all monsters.”

Supernatural will return to The CW on April 15.

He wasn’t sure for what or why, and he doesn’t like walking into this with questions. But there was only so much time he could wait before his curiosity got the better of him, and he was making his way through to the top floor. this was his mother. she was gone for most of his life, and now he had the opportunity to go and see her. it wasn’t something he could just pass up.He hesitated again at her door, just long enough to take in the name and the fact that he was actually going to see his mother. then, he knocked.“Who is it?”The voice was soft and muffled behind the door, and it took him a moment to realize that someone was speaking before he cleared his throat and opened his mouth.“It’s, uh. It’s Sam.”The door was opened in a half a second, and the next thing Sam knew, he was looking right into his mother’s eyes. He was caught like a deer in the headlights, unsure of where to move next, but she just smiled up at him, and all the nerves and worries that he was feeling the entire walk to the resort melted away.“Hi, Sammy.”He smiled back awkwardly, unabashed and wide. He’d always hated that nickname, but when she said it, it was like music to his ears. “Hi, Mom.”The smile stayed on her face and she reached forward, taking his hand in hers. “Come here. Dean said she had been there for a while, but seeing the evidence of it was harder than he thought it’d be. Still, that all paled in comparison to the fact that Mary was there, standing in front of him, and she was happy to see him. she didn’t blame him the way he blamed himself.“We have so much to catch up on,” she said after a moment. “There’s so much I missed … ” Her voice trailed off after a moment, her face full of concern. “Can you stay for a little while? can we … can we talk?”He nodded slowly. “Yeah. sure. definitely.”“Good,” she nodded, giving him a small smile as she reached up to place a hand against the side of his face. it was the first time she had actually touched him beyond taking his hand earlier and this one was a bit more motherly. He couldn’t stop himself from leaning into the touch, soaking in the fact that all his life he had never had a mother and now she was right there, standing right in front of him. “I think I might have messed things up with your brother.”Sam shook his head as she lead him over to the couch. “Dean just … he still remembers you.
