The History And Making Of The Bayeux Tapestry

Buying home decor such as beautiful wall hanging tapestries is not always a very simple project and one has to do a lot of research before buying the best kind of wall-hanging for your home. There are many different designs among the tapestries that it is literally very confusing to choose the one. This is because of the fact that all of them look extremely good and are very captivating.

There are countless designs of tapestries and it depends entirely on your taste which designs you would choose for your wall. one very unique and interesting type of tapestry is the Bayeux tapestry. these tapestries are known to be very interesting and catchy because of the history behind them.

Bayeux tapestries are basically the tapestries which tell us about the history and the victory of a known conqueror from Medieval times, William was known for his courage and the Norman invasion in what is England now. the tapestries try to tell us about the events from the Norman war and about the courageous warrior. the battle of Hastings was fought in 1066 and this is what the Bayeux tapestry tries to tell through the woven image. the first Bayeux tapestry is huge at about 20 inches high and 230 feet long.

The most amazing fact about the Bayeux tapestry is that it tells us about the whole 1066 war and the events after it. However, more surprisingly there are only three women who are shown on the tapestry. one of them is the sister of King Harold, the other wife of Edith the confessor and the third women is unknown and she is just seen to be fleeing from a burning building. the total tapestry has six hundred and twenty three people on it which includes all the warriors and the other men. Apart from this it has 202 horses, 50 dogs and a lot more that is woven into this famous tapestry.

The borders of the Bayeux tapestry are embedded with prints of dogs, wolves and fox. A wide range of colors is used for the tapestry which includes blue, green, tan and gray in abundance. the tapestry is known to be made in Winchester which was known for amazing skills of needle working. However this belief is a little bit controversial as there are people who believe that it was made somewhere else.

The Bayeux tapestry was made to keep up the traditions of the English and tradition. in past these kinds of tapestries which would depict the scenes from a war were made before this battle. therefore in order to honor the victory of William the conqueror, his half brother placed the commission to make this tapestry. the tapestry was made over a period of ten years which is a huge time but if you look at this marvel of art you will get to know why they took so long to make it.

Take a look at the Bayeux tapestry in a myriad of famous sections woven into separate and educational and artistic works of art. Enjoy.

The Strange & Wonderful World of Weird Real Estate

Filed in complete winchester Leave a comment

Unsightly abodes and peculiar properties can be found all over the world-from the Toilet house in South Korea, to the guitar-shaped home in Fayetteville, Georgia. There’s even a home in England whose interior is an astoundingly accurate replica of the Starship Enterprise.

Neighbors either love or revile unique properties like these, while visitors stop in bus loads to gawk at them.

What’s the appeal for homeowners to build garish or unusual structures? most real estate agents know that outlandish homes are a difficult sell, so why build them in the first place? Is it strictly for the attention? or perhaps it’s a simple case of artistic expression and a love of architecture.

Home construction is very much an art form, though these days most homes on the block are painted with the same brush. Craftsmans, Ranchers and the occasional Tudor line our tree-lined residential streets. when a new property comes along that goes against the style precedent already set in the area, it can often spark resentment and bemused curiosity.

Most neighbors see a house made out of beer cans as something that will take away from their own property values. And indeed it’s true that the value of an unusual structure such as a Star Trek themed home, a spaceship-shaped house, or a home built as an homage to the Flintstones can be tricky to assess. There are even homes constructed entirely out of found items and garbage, so their aesthetic appeal is largely debated. how does one evaluate the worth of these structures if their charm is so subjective?

In terms of economics, it’s a terrible idea to build a house that’s shaped like a guitar, a shoe, a dog, or appears to be upside down.

When you’re trying to sell a unique property, you’re only going to appeal to a very select group of buyers. Not everyone wants an eccentric house, so these homes can remain on the market for a very long time, making neighbors nervous about how their own properties will fare when it comes time to sell.

Perhaps a less cynical way to look at these homes is to consider the time and energy that went into constructing these labors of love (or obsession). For instance, the infamous Beer can house took nearly 40,000 cans and 18 years worth of beer drinking for John Milkovisch to complete his masterpiece.

The Winchester Mystery House in California was built by Sarah Winchester over a 38 year period, and includes stairs that go nowhere, has over 40 fireplaces, 160 rooms, and three elevators. It is rumored that construction on the house became an obsession spurred on by a visit with a psychic who told Sarah that she was cursed, and would die if she ever stopped adding onto the house. the construction finally stopped when Sarah passed away at the age of 83.

In other cases, artists turn their houses into the ultimate canvass for a lifetime of work, adding sculptures and murals to their homes as way to truly live and breathe their art.

While obsession is never a good thing, it is admirable to see people who aren’t afraid to stand out. they have creativity flowing through their veins, and have a particular story they need to tell through the architecture of their homes. As our most sacred spaces, it makes sense to treat one’s home as a shrine to whatever it is that one loves. As a realtor, these unique homes can present an enormous challenge in terms of marketing and pricing, while for nearby residents, these homes encroach on the established aesthetic of the entire neighborhood. As a person however with an appreciation for passion and individuality, these homes bring back a sense of fun and adventure to the world of home building and decor. There’s a touch of whimsy among these homeowners, which is a trait this world can definitely use more of.

The British Royal Family

Filed in wessex uk Leave a comment

The Royal Family, otherwise known as the British Monarchy has been ruling over the UK since 871 when King Alfred the Great was recognised as the first British Monarch or King of England. The current British Monarch stands as Queen Elizabeth II who has two main roles, one of which is official and one of which is unofficial. The official role is head of state, the unofficial role is head of the nation.

Head of state This role is what gives the British Monarch the power to appoint Prime Ministers and approve legislation as well as bestow honours. on top of this they also have official roles to play in other organisations, which includes the Armed Forces and the Church of England.

Head of nation The role of the British Monarch when it comes to the less official role of head of nation is when the British Monarch acts as a focus for national identity, unity and pride. The role also includes providing a sense of stability and continuity. it is also within this role that the British Monarch recognises success and excellence and supports public and voluntary services.

Members of the Royal Family When the Queen is however carrying out her duties she is supported by other working members of the Royal Family. They help with carrying out a wide range of public engagements and involvements with charities as well as personal interests. The Royal Family however is a large one and one that dates back years and years. currently the Royal Family is made up of the Queen and her consort, The Duke of Edinburgh as well as the following:

  • The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall who are The Queen’s eldest son and his second wife
  • Prince William of Wales and Prince Harry of Wales who are The Prince of Wales son’s
  • The Duke of York – The Queen’s second son
  • Princess Beatrice of York and Princess Eugenie of York – The Duke of York’s daughters
  • The Earl and Countess of Wessex who are The Queen’s third son and his wife
  • Viscount Severn, the Earl of Wessex’s son and Lady Louise Windsor, the Earl of Wessex’s daughter
  • The Princess Royal – The Queen’s daughter
  • The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and The Duke and Duchess of Kent and Princess Alexandra, The Honourable Lady Ogilvy who are the Queens cousins and their spouses.

Within the UK there is no strict legal or definition of who is considered to be a Royal Family member. However those who carry the titles HM – his or Her Majesty or HRM – his or Her Royal Highness are always considered members and all of the above have one of these titles.

The British Monarch – Queen Elizabeth II Queen Elizabeth II is the head of the British Royal Family and has reigned for 57 years. She is the 32nd great-granddaughter of King Alfred the Great who as I previously mentioned was the first effective King of England during the years of 871-899. She has four children and eight grandchildren and is 83 years old.

Queen Elizabeth II has broken several records. She has become the first reigning monarch to have been married for 60 years. in December 2007 she became the oldest reigning British Monarch and has even outlived her great, great grandmother Queen Victoria. Also in March 2007 Queen Elizabeth II become the 3rd longest reigning monarch in over 1,200 years of British history.

The Royal Family have been a part of the UK for hundreds of years and the British Monarchy also represents several other countries, making it one of the biggest monarchy’s in the world and the title of Queen or King of England will continue to be passed through the family for as long as the blood line continues.

No to cuts, yes to green investment and jobs, says Winchester Green Party

Filed in winchester job Leave a comment

The cuts to higher education, training, council staff have been brought about because in England we have had to bail out 4 banks, Northern Rock, Lloyds, Royal Bank of Scotland and Bradford and Bingley.

1   there should be a march to London demanding that banks should pay into a fund to relieve the taxpayer of the burden.

2    Furthermore that there should be a regulator who will have complete power to investigate all the “trades” that bank undertake and to look into any aspect of their business to see if what they are doing has a useful purpose.  in rather the same way that Health and Safety Inspectors can investigate a factory.

3  All those bankers who have received “bonuses” in the last 20 years in any bank, should provide evidence of the work they have undertaken and that should be examined to determine it’s usefulness and whether it helped to contribute to the world banking crisis.   ie was it a bad loan.

4  We must reduce our dependence on “financial services” considering the misery they have caused.

5.  We should invest in green technologies so that those items which use a lot of raw materials ie cars, buildings, are built in such a way that they do not use precious raw materials.  that is the way forward, not relying on people moving money from A to B and picking something up as it passes.

More Winchester pubs on the verge of closure

PUBS in Winchester are continuing to suffer as more and more landlords are leaving the trade.

The Heart in Hand is set to be bulldozed after planners approved a housing scheme on the Bar end Road site.

The New Queens Head in Stanmore Lane is bieng marketed by its owners as a possible housing site.

Pat and Lyn Chesters are the latest landlords at The Cricketers Inn in Easton to be priced out of the business.

After spending 20 years in New Zealand and Australia, the couple returned to England hoping to crack the pub business.

but they are the fifth different landlords at The Cricketers in the past four years, and mr Chesters said the pub business is not financially viable.

They invested £30,000 of their savings into the pub but have lost it all, and do not want to lose any more.

he said: “It’s the ridiculously high cost of beer from the brewery. Another thing is the amount it costs us to pay rent and service charges. if you add that to the beer and the other costs of running a business it’s just not viable.

“We are out in Easton where there is no public transport so people cannot get here.

mr Chesters said the customer side of business had been very enjoyable “The customer side of it was extremely enjoyable. a lot of people came in and enjoyed the service we gave them. They liked the food, drink and the cheerful welcome. There are a lot of lovely people here.

“But running the pub side is tough when you have got to close up at the end of the day and you’ve only taken £49.”

The Cricketers joins a long list of pubs finding themselves in financial trouble.

Just last month The Rack and Manger, in Stockbridge Road near Crawley, closed down after owner David Allen invested £30,000 but was not getting a financially viable return.

The Rising Sun pub in Bridge Street, Winchester, has been empty for some time, while fellow city centre pub The Albion, in Stockbridge Road, is for sale as owner John Sweeney prefers to concentrate on his other pub, first in last Out, in Winnall.

Percy Hobbs, in Alresford Road, Morn Hill, is being offered to tenants by owners Mitchells & Butlers, after having two owners in the past three years.

Enterprise Inns are also on the look out for new tenants for The White Horse in Main Road, Otterbourne, which closed in February.

The company said it was hoping to appoint a temporary manager to reopen the pub and then go on to find a permanent replacement.

Storck to close Bendicks factory in Winchester

IT is by Royal Appointment and a quintessentially British treat made in the ancient capital of England.

but now the owners of Bendicks Mints has warned the 140 workers at the Winchester plant that they want to relocate production to their homeland in the heart of Germany.

Global food giant Storck says it makes economic sense to make the sweets at its Eastern German plant while continuing to sell them under its uniquely British brand name.

but Winchester MP Steve Brine is today holding crisis talks with ministers and also Storck management to beg them to reconsider.

he said: “I was really disappointed to hear a move away from Winchester is even being considered by Storck.

“It would be a blow to the city’s economy to lose these jobs at the moment, especially when we want to see an increase in private sector employment.

“I have a series of meetings to find out more from the company and am liasing closely with ministers.”

a Stork spokesman last night said: “Storck UK has recently announced the start of a consultation period to determine the future of its production facility in Winchester, Hampshire.

the sales and marketing department of Storck UK, also based in Winchester, will not be affected.”

“Until the consultation is complete there will be no further announcements.”

the multi-national food conglomerate remained tight-lipped about how long the consultation process would continue. nor would it reveal when the plant, its only one in the UK, could close and relocate to Ohrdruff, where it makes Werther’s Originals.

John Harrocks, director of the North Hampshire Chamber of Commerce, said he was “deeply concerned” about the closure plans.

he said: “Bendicks is seen as a quintessential British brand and I hope that Storck will recognise that the strength and integrity of the Bendicks brand will be more durable if production remains in Winchester, the ancient capital of England.”

Switching production from the Winnall factory abroad was made easier by the UK’s relaxed labour laws, Mr Harrocks said.

he claimed in other European states employment laws make it difficult for firms to shut down factories and move the work to another country.

Unite, the union representing the workforce, echoed his view.

Unite regional officer Ian Woodland said: “Yet again, weak labour laws are working against the interests of the UK.

“Unite will be doing everything possible to protect jobs in a community where unemployment is already too high.

“The skilled workforce who have spent years manufacturing high-quality confectionery now face an uncertain future.”

Arsenal target Wickham: I’m not going anywhere

Filed in wickham uk Leave a comment

It’s the news no Arsenal fan wants to hear, and we’re not talking about a contract extension for Manuel Almunia. rather, wonderkid Connor Wickham has declared he has no intention of leaving Ipswich for the Gunners in the near future.

The 17-year-old striker (above), rated one of the most promising young players in English football, has been coveted by Arsenal ever since he impressed against them in January’s Carling Cup semi-final. But Wickham says he wants to fine-tune his game at Portman Road.

“To be that highly-rated is amazing, but all I can do is keep working hard on my football,” he said. “I am signed to Ipswich for the next few years, and I am concentrating on that.”

Wickham, who stands 6ft 3in, was recently named the Football League young player of the year for 2010-2011 but he shows no sign of letting the attention go to his head. “I want to work hard for Ipswich and get them to the Premier League,” he explained. “Hopefully we can do that.”

The Metro claims that Arsenal would be prepared to give Ipswich £10m in return for Wickham but apparently manager Paul Jewell is determined to hold on to the teenager. As for Wickham, he appears unfazed by the attention lavished on him by Arsenal, saying: “To play football for England, and to win the awards I am winning, shows I have the right people around me – I am taking all the advice on board and using it to my advantage.”

and it seems that Wickham isn’t the only up-and-coming player reluctant to join Arsenal now that they’ve cultivated a reputation as a side of spineless losers.

The Gunners had been on the tail of Dutch sensation Stefan de Vrij, but Spanish website Intergoles report that the 19-year-old centre-back has revealed he’d rather join Barcelona than Arsenal seeing how the Gunners wouldn’t know success if it nipped in behind their back four and nutmegged Manuel Almunia.

The 19-year-old de Vrij is currently with Feyenoord but he’s expected to be sold by the Rotterdam club in the summer and while Arsenal had been hoping to secure his signature they now need to think again: “I dream of playing for Barcelona,” de Vrij told Intergoles. “In the future I would love to play there. The best thing would be to go to Spain or Germany – the football is more elaborate there than in the Premier League.”

The race is hotting up to sign Marseille defender Taye Taiwo. Liverpool and Aston Villa had both been courting the 25-year-old Nigerian – along with once great Italian club Juventus – but now Talksport claim he will sign for Benfica. The full-back has been a mainstay of the Marseille side in recent seasons, as well as appearing regularly for Nigeria, but Taiwo has decided it’s time for a change of scenery and for reasons known only to himself he’s decided the bracing air of Portugal will be just the ticket.

Finally, the German press reckon Andreas Ottl will swap Bayern Munich for Bolton Wanderers in the summer, a somewhat strange decision for the 26-year-old midfielder who has been with the Bundesliga side since 2005.

Apparently Ottl has been chased by several continental clubs but he’s rather smitten with the north-west of England and has been wooed by Bolton boss Owen Coyle’s pledge that the Trotters are going places. Didn’t Del Boy used to say the same thing…
